Souta head honcho, Chukku, takes us on another journey with our 10th instalment of the Radio Show, selecting from a wide spectrum of his current tracks. He kicks things off with tripped out Electronica into Italo-tinged, Indie Dance numbers, before venturing into moody Afro territory and Melodic House with a generous helping of sultry vocals. He wraps the voyage up on a lighthearted tropical note with plenty of guitar and marimba to leave you with a smile on your face.

Biography
One element which makes music so powerful is its capacity to take listeners on a ride. Chukku has spent the greater half of his life mastering this art form, as he bridges the gap between deep melodic, tech, afro house and techno. He commands elevated atmospheres and is a maestro of movement on the dance floor, which are often attributed to his uplifting percussive sounds.

For Chukku, music has been a part of him for as long as he can remember. From the age of 15, he had been playing guitar and singing in various bands. It wasn’t long before he became a fully fledged multi-instrumentalist, and the diversity of his musical diet and upbringing has led to the cultivation of a sound, and an attitude towards music that is uniquely his own. With the punk ethos coursing through his veins, Chukku refuses to depend on libraries or samples, and it shows in his raw, DIY productions. Above all, it’s about creative freedom, and expression in its purest form.

The DJ and producer has played in clubs & Event’s across Germany and abroad, including famous nightclubs like Volar (HK), Mudita (HK), Glow (TH), Observatory (VT), Pepperclub (CN) Rheingold Saal (DE), Neuschwanstein, (DE), Funky Chicken (DE), Nachtflug (DE) , Tresor (DE), Warehouse (DE), Kiesgrub (DE) , Move Club (DE), Greenkomm (DE) and Pasha Ibiza. He has also played in top-tier festivals such as Clockenflap and Wonderfruit with an audience of 80,000.

He has played alongside a number of heavyweight artists: Damian Lazarus, Kenny Glasgow, Tube & Berger, Nakadia, Oxia, YokoO, Viken Arman, Felix Da Housecat, Carl Cox to name just a few.

Chukku has a single out titled ‘Sleepless’, and a slew of singles forthcoming this year. Chukku also runs his own independent electronic underground record label, Double Malt Records, which features a talented roster of both local and international artists. If the DJ/producer wasn’t busy enough, he also runs his own professional recording studio in Hong Kong, where he provides sound design, mixing and mastering services for a broad spectrum of clients, including TV and film. While this might seem like a lot (and it is), it definitely rings true that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. And this is exactly what drives Chukku to do what he does.

New York-based producer Tamir Regev has worked on various projects and under several aliases throughout the past decade, producing for other people as well as solo. Multi-instrumentalist, writer, and producer Avi Snow is one of his frequent collaborators and is a master of indie-pop grooves. Also involved in this release is No/Me, a singer-songwriter, and KONG.

Souta. is more than a record label: it is passion, a feeling, a crew, a family.  

Souta. in Japanese means “sudden sound of the wind”, the label’s sound is forward-thinking House & Techno; thick, big & sudden, deep with a sprinkle of Afro and plenty of playfulness. The crew comes from several continents, backgrounds and talents. Some have been lead designers for top fashion houses, others running infamous hedonistic parties in New York, others are leading couch critics and nap aficionados. The goal is to bring all of these pieces together to do something serious. Seriously fun. 

Several members grew up living on a skateboard and playing in punk bands. This punk attitude is a cornerstone of Souta., to break the rules, think outside the box, do what feels good, and do things for yourself. Souta’s artists are not out to compete with Mozart’s symphonies; they are out to have fun making electronic music, and share this feeling with others. 

Not only a mental construct, the past two years have seen the label’s founder Chukku, building a studio complex on the tropical island of Bali, to be the label’s creative epicentre, complete with a BBQ working overtime and a touch of surfing on the side.
