Issued on BBE Music, “Reflections” is the new album by London-based harp player and composer Alina Bzhezhinska, alongside her HipHarpCollective.

Following up her critically acclaimed debut album “Inspiration” (Ubuntu 2018), Bzhezhinskaputs together a second long-player, collaborating with British jazz stars Tony Kofi(Saxophones), Jay Phelps (Trumpet), Julie Walkington (Double Bass) and vocalist VimalaRowe, strongly supported by international talents Mikele Montolli (Electric Bass), Joel Prime(Percussion), Adam Teixeira (Drums) and Ying Xue (Violin & Viola).

Alina creates a unique sound on the harp with layered effects and electronics, combining original works and covers to pay homage to some of jazz, funk and hip-hop’s greatest innovators. Throughout the record, she draws from a variety of influences, including the likes of Dorothy Ashby’s ‘Afro-Harping’, Alice Coltrane’s spiritual outputs, Joe Henderson’s free-form jazz experimentation, 90s Acid Jazz and Trip-Hop.

“This album is very vibrant and reflects directly on London’s multicultural community. We had so much fun making this recording – it truly built up our morale in the middle of the pandemic and I hope our fans will feel this energy too.

For ‘Reflections’ I tried to break from any stereotypes and limitations – what you hear is my own choice of sounds and influences, taken from the many mixtapes I’ve been making since I was a teenager. I put together the music I like to listen to when I am happy or sad when I feel like dancing or meditating. The tunes we play are my own reflections on what I love the most – a free spirit, courage, innovation and all the beautiful things life gives us.

Alina Bzhezhinska & HipHarpCollective - Fire

This previously unreleased album by the Horace Tapscott Quintet was unearthed from master tapes in the Flying Dutchman archives. Recorded in 1969 and was intended to be a follow-up album to the classic 'The Giant Is Awakened' which was released that year.

The iconic pianist and composer Horace Tapscott was one of the most unique and important figures in LA’s jazz world. This lost recording was produced by one of the pivotal figures in jazz, Bob Thiele, a leading behind-the-scenes star who worked with many of the greats in jazz, such as Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Della Reese, Shirley Scott, Gil Scott-Heron, the list goes on. His name can be seen gracing, arguably the best, Impulse! releases and those released on his own Flying Dutchman imprint set up in 1969.

Joining Horace for this three-track, deep, heavy, avant-garde session are the same stellar cast featured on 'The Giant Is Awakened'; Arthur Blythe on Alto Sax, Everett Brown Jr on Drums, with David Bryant and Walter Savage Jr. on Bass. Kicking things off we have 'World Peace’, which starts with an almost baroque-esque melody, leading to an eruption in sound, it then ends in the same manner it began. The beautiful 'Your Child' is the jewel in the crown, skirting modal, deep jazz and introducing elements of free jazz. 'For Fats' with its bow bass and piano intro takes you on a journey, dropping into, at times dark, stormy melodies and developing a driving energy as the composition progresses.

After recording this album, Horace was said to be wary of the music industry, so he retreated and distanced himself from this world, recording only for the independent labels UGMAA, Interplay Records, and Nimbus West Records. He set up The Pan-Afrikan People’s Arkestra and reintroduced the pan-African-roots sound back into the heart of jazz. He also developed and promoted the art form through performances and recordings.

Thankfully, this session from these wonderful musical pioneers was preserved and finally has its time to shine.

En ville, le contact avec la nature se cantonne souvent à l’arrosage de ficus en open space ou la contemplation des ronds6points fleuris. On peut s’en accommoder mais à l’heure où les forêts partent en fumée et la biodiversité en capilotade, il est temps de réfléchir à la pauvreté des rapports que nous entretenons avec les arbres, les plantes, les fleurs, et tout ce qui pousse autour de nous. Peut-on espérer être un tant soit peu à la hauteur de l’urgence écologique si on ne sait même pas faire la différence entre un saule et un frêne ? planter des semis? soigner le mildiou? bichonner un kiwi ? 
Après un été passé à regarder la planète en feu, Delphine Saltel entame une série consacrée à nos désirs de jardin et au besoin vital de changer notre relation au monde vivant. Ce seizième épisode de "Vivons heureux avant la fin du monde" débute par un rembobinage historique en compagnie de la géographe Flaminia Paddeu, qui apporte un éclairage historique sur la disparition progressive des jardins en ville, et le fossé qui s’est ainsi creusé entre les citadins et la nature. Qu’est6ce que cela change d’avoir une parcelle de terre près de chez soi et de s’en occuper ? De profiter d'un espace, privé ou collectif, potager ou botanique, pour développer une relation pratique, physique, profonde avec les écosystèmes ? La biologiste Anne-Caroline Prévot débroussaille les allées vers un jardin politique...

Glenn Fallows and Mark Treffel released their first album, ‘The Globeflower Master Vol. 1’, on Mr Bongo in September 2021. With its lush, warm and timeless productions paying homage to classic 60s and 70s soundtrack composers, it was very well received and struck a chord with the scene’s connoisseurs. Louder Than War emphatically stated, "It’s impossible not to like The Globeflower Masters Vol. 1.”, with Gigwise echoing that praise “slickly compelling retro vibes”. 

The Globeflower Master Vol. 2 is the slightly edgier and more grown-up sequel to Mark and Glenn's 2021 debut album. For this excursion, the Brighton-based duo wanted to lean a little further into their European film soundtrack influences, with particular inspiration mined from the works of Stefano Torossi, David Shire, and Roger Webb. This expansion of their sound builds upon the rich tapestry of cinematic funk à la David Axelrod, Serge Gainsbourg and Morricone that fashioned Vol. 1. Here the arrangements, melodies, and harmonies have been refined; only what is needed is left. 
 
The recordings are drenched in visual imagery; they stimulate the senses and invite the imagination to roam. Ethereal, hazy memories of lost summers are triggered; the beauty of listening to music when driving along a deserted road in the Italian countryside lined with cypress trees heading towards the sun, and beyond. As the musical journey progresses, we even take a voyage to another planet. Whether these memories are real or constructed recollections of scenes from film and television, the tracks evoke a feeling of nostalgia and comfort. Like all the best music, 'The Globeflower Masters Vol. 2' takes us out of ourselves even if it's only temporarily.
 
To consolidate the shape of the sound, drummers Timmy Rickard and Ollie Boorman (who also featured on Vol. 1) and John Maiden (Tricky collaborator) sprinkled their magic and forged their stamps onto the recordings. Collaborating with other talented musicians contributed to the picture Mark and Glenn wanted to paint. The ‘Globeflower Master Vol. 2’ is a fitting tribute to the music they love and care deeply about and a glorious addition to their musical world.
