This is the culmination of a nine day training for nine South Sudanese women journalists (two with children present) working at Internews community radio stations in South Sudan, known as The Radio Community. On the last day of training, I gave them a "vox pop" workshop on how to edit basic audio. This was the demonstration.

28-year-old Anthony Thon was only 15 when he was captured by the SPLA, Sudanese People's Liberation Army, and made to fight Khartoum government forces in Sudan's second civil war. 

In 2005, after the signing of the CPA, Comprehensive Peace Agreement, he escaped the SPLA and returned to school. 

After South Sudan received independence in 2011, Thon was teaching primary school students in Malakal. When the current conflict erupted in December 2013, Thon fled from his home to the UNMISS, United Nations Mission in South Sudan, base on the edge of town.

Thon now lives as an IDP, internally displaced person, at a UN protected camp in Malakal, South Sudan, where he works to educate and inform other displaced people in his community.

Following a week-long, intensive, training on storytelling, the use of sound, interviewing and news gathering methods, Ruot Gatphan Ngech does a reporter stand-up in the UN Protection of Civilians site in Malakal, South Sudan.

I hosted a series of radio workshops over the course of three weeks for a group of displaced youth living in the Malakal POC (UN protection site). 

Nile FM has agreed to give these youth a weekly radio program to continue building their radio journalism skills. "Young Reporters" is South Sudan's newest radio program, only on Nile FM 98.0 in Malakal.

12-year-old Akoi Mayen Kur has lived in Juba's Mahad IDP settlement for displaced people, along with his family, since fleeing the violence in Bor, Jonglei state Dec. 24, 2013.

Almost two years since South Sudan's conflict erupted, Akoi Mayen Kur still hopes to leave the displaced people's settlement at Mahad and return home to Bor to be with his extended family.

This was recorded for a new series called "Messages from Mahad" for Mingkaman 100 FM, a radio station set up by Internews South Sudan in 2014.

We first met Thembi when she was 19 and living in one of the largest townships in South Africa. We were struck by her candor, sense of humor and her courage. She was willing to speak out about having AIDS at a time when few South Africans were willing to say, "I have AIDS." Thembi carried a tape recorder from 2004 to 2005 to document her life. This is her story.
