Cameras in our faces while we try to create timeless classics…. what could go wrong? Foolhardy? Yes! Difficult? Yes! But a very interesting look into the goings-on of a recording studio. The time limitations led to numerous traffic jams, ego meltdowns, fascist coups, Socialist revolts, and some shaky footage.…. but when the dust settled we found that it also created freethoughtforms, un-shackled experiments, and holy magical moments.   For this attempt at a “Song In A Day”, we were quite distracted by the fabulous things going on around us… gay marriage was ruled legal nationwide!  What took you so long America?!  At the farewell Grateful Dead show, a giant rainbow appeared behind the stage and everyone thought it was Jerry Garcia saying “HI”. A massive protest for LGBTQ rights in Turkey was hit by riot police hoses and the amount of water caused a huge rainbow to appear over Istanbul…you just can’t stop progress, People!
  So we had to sing about these events and celebrate every time humanity takes an evolutionary step forward (but God, it is slow goin!!).  We “see a rainbow in the sky, the stars are saying Give love a try!”

 In “Hello Baby”, we sing :

 “Jupiter and Venus holding hands,
the lion lays down with the lamb.” 

The planets were indeed right next to each other that morning, and the Angry Father God and Goddess of Love really should reconcile.
 For our session we recruited the talents of Dane Sandborg and Micah Sohl (Foxtrails),  two amazingly talented local musicians who we love working with.  They rocked the session and we even had time to do a Little Jam. We hope you enjoy our little homage to progress, love and freedom. Are we optimistic goofballs? YES! Hello Baby Hello!

For this episode, we recruited our buddy Eric Ernest Johnson to paint a mural on the back of “The Wigwam” (which is what we call our garage). We decided to do a mural of a Chumash native village, something that might have been in the area before the Spanish arrived and “saved” everyone. Venice Beach, CA has a rich history of murals and this beauty will certainly add to the lexicon. 
The Chumash are a very interesting tribe that lived in coastal California from Malibu up to Paso Robles. They had fairly primitive technology but were master canoe builders, traders, and had a very rich artistic and religious life. It is a great gift to stumble upon a cave filled with beautiful psychedelic and ancient paintings of the cosmos and the “other realms “ while on a hike. The medicine men were great soul travelers. Modern day chumash have a reservation and still conduct ceremonies. If interested, check this out:

While Eric got busy painting the wikiup homes, canoes, and native characters, we tried to concoct a song that would be about his artwork.  What if we could enter the mural and go back in time?  Are we so different from them? Or are we all a family, divided only by time?
 We are a “West Coast Family” … with “so many hearts, but one love!”
 In the middle of the song, we break into a chant.  “Moomat Ahiko” which means “breath of the sea” in Tongvan (which is the name of the tribe in the Los Angeles area).
 The music video has us enter the mural and dance around through time. My son Ravi goes up the mountain to visit the Shaman in The Cave and returns with the secrets of adulthood. We paddle out in our canoes and celebrate all West Coast dreamers! Ride that whale! We hope you enjoy this ride and heartfelt homage to the custodians of the western land beyond time!!

"Blessed Be!"

The Space Babies Show: A Song in a Day is a series of 6 documentary – style videos that will walk you through our unique songwriting process. Each episode begins in the morning as a blank slate… and over the course of one day, a song is born. 

When guest artist Osher Levi arrived at Earthstar, we knew we were going to have some fun.  Osher and Rebecca have been friends for almost 30 years and have traveled the world together spreading giggly love and mischief throughout the seven seas. They both have young sons. And they are fiercesome goofballs.

For this episode called “Sister Love”,  Osher and Rebecca wrote a song about their love for each other and their fierce motherhood,  set to the mystical calls of the ancient didgeridoo.

 Osher plays the didgeridoo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Didgeridoo), a unique wind instrument from indigenous Australia. It is made from a hollowed out length of eucalyptus wood and is played using circular breathing (which is a crazy technique of simultaneously sucking in air as you blow out). It dates back at least 1,500 years.  Osher also uses her didgeridoo for ceremony and healing. The deep resonant vibrations can realign bodies and minds and re-harmonize a person towards vibrant health and happiness. Very powerful stuff. We hope you enjoy it.

For this episode of “The Space Babies Show: A Song in a Day”, John X was asked to decide on the theme for the day’s song. He had just watched a speech by the prolific Malala Yousafzai wherein she had touched upon the concepts of free speech and thought and how vital they are to the growth and evolution of any societal & tribal structure. 
No other species on the planet has a greater ability to express thoughts, emotions, concepts & just general knowledge than our own. And yet all too often, that gift is suppressed & discouraged by even some of the planet’s most sophisticated thinkers. This ability is truly a blessing that needs to be exercised.  
Today we celebrate Free Expression by doing exactly that. As a song theme, each writer had complete freedom to ‘do what you wanna do, be who you wanna be’ and what emerged was a lighthearted homage to what would seem to be a “no brainer” of a concept (although this world can make it so complicated).
Our guest Michael “Aladdin” Kuehnert closed out the writing session with a spontaneous, surrealist journey into ourselves. His colorful lyrics are possibly surpassed only by his amazing performance in the music video. His beautiful & talented wife Jasmin Saidi-Kuehnert also joins us for a brief piano interlude during the song itself.

What happens when you pull random words from a hat? And that hat is a leopard-patterned fez? Can you get the makings of a great song? You certainly get the juxtaposition of words that have possibly never met….like 

“successful mermaid dreams”

 and 

“child dragon mama carnival government”.  

We invited guest artist Eric Ernest Johnson (https://www.ericernestjohnson.com/) to join us on our quest to liberate the lyrics of our song “Venice Beach Mystery”. He is a poet very familiar with this strategy and he happily jumped in. Later, as we tried to make some “sense” of the madness we created, the songwriting process briefly hit an existential traffic jam, but eventually got back up to speed and we were able to use our automatic writing-random-word exercise to its fullest nonsensical magical relevance! He he he 
The surrealists and Dadaist have been using these techniques for a hundred years.  They are techniques designed to rid the brain of “ego mind” the safe place of “normal” and allow the dream world to take over. We think the results are highly enjoyable. But then again, so is an ice dream giraffe headphone wave!

For this episode of “the SPACE BABIES SHOW: a Song in a Day”, we chose the theme of WATER and Michael and Rebecca disappeared into their journals to present the yin and yang of our relationship to this most sacred life-affirming substance. 

The world is warming up and there are record breaking droughts occurring everywhere. (How is your habitat doing?). And everyone is in a shocked, confused, passive state about what to do about it. But one fact will always remain: water is life. 

At one point we chant the name of “Yemanja” , an Orisha from the Yoruba religion. She is often depicted as a mermaid and can be a very protective and powerful Mama! She is in charge of our rivers and oceans and we don’t want to get on her bad side! 

In our music video we have two very blinged-out designer water bottles driving recklessly around the desert and through Las Vegas. No explanation is necessary for those crazy corporate bottles. We hope you like our song and the process of making it.

A stellar musical odyssey, happy vibrations and mindful psychedelia. 

Space Babies is the musical project of Rebecca and Michael Vest in collaboration with Dave Scher and John X Volaitis, spreading love and happy vibrations from Venice, California. These cosmic beings are here to reflect on all the beauty in this world with their intergalactic groove and trippy melodies. Inspired by the 60’s and 70’s psychedelia, Ancient Future, human evolution and pristine nature, their music aims to connect with the world and all that is freaky and beautiful. Combining their thoughtful lyrics and mellow sound with far out space imagery, Space Babies wants to reach out to their future tribe all around the world.

Music was the second language to these flower children while growing up. With backgrounds in Southern California, New Mexico, and New York, they have worked with music their entire lives. Collectively, they have garnered experience in everything between recording in studios and making videos, performing, touring and playing with various groups throughout the years. By the present century, however, they rooted in Venice, California, and have since released three albums recorded in their studio, Earthstar Creation Center. While they might often be found working at their studio creating new songs and videos, Space Babies are more than just musicians: they are lovers of life and believers in a better tomorrow.

The band will be releasing their next album Spaceport on April 27th, 2018.
