The Bread Will Rise

MIDNIGHT

Originally conceived for a song battle I occasionally have with my friend Sir Thomas, this was the first track I created after downloading a large amount of free orchestral VSTs through Spitfire Labs and SINE Player. There exists a version of this track with vocals, but the lyrics are based on an inside joke between the two of us and I felt the song would work better without vocals as an ending for the album. The heavy synth in the third section would go on to be one I used for Zen Diagram and look forward to including in future tracks. This project took 2 hours and 19 minutes to finish.

Eclectic

The Ocean

The longest track on the album and the longest track I’ve ever produced. Initially it was just the sort of circusy part with the arpeggios and goofy walking bassline and I wasn’t very fond of it, I just needed to do something in FL Studio as I hadn’t produced in some time. After a while I began adding more, and more, and more, and it grew and grew on me. The guitar I use is an LTD MH-400 and it has an absolutely stellar tone for solos. Combined with Guitar Rig 6 to get the distortion going and it created something magical. This project took 17 hours and 23 minutes to complete.

Pinnacle

This track was the last project to be started and was only initially conceived 3 weeks before the album was uploaded. The initial plan was for a piano and acoustic guitar duet, but I ended up adding in several ambient effects like the crackling fireplace, the rainstorm, and the crowd chatter, and felt that acoustic guitar would add a bit too much clutter. The SFX were all sourced from copyright free videos on YouTube. I attempted to record my cat Geraldine for the purring and meowing but she wouldn’t cooperate while the mic was recording. Oh well. This project took 2 hours and 56 minutes to complete.

Home

Originally a beat titled ROW, this track was made while livestreaming on Twitch and taking audience suggestions. My friend Justin suggested the idea of using Seth Rogen’s laughs while my friend Ash suggested I rap about tacos. The initial beat was finished over about a 5 hour and 30 minute stream, and the lyrics and vocal recording themselves didn’t get finished until the day of uploading the album. This project took 8 hours and 39 minutes to complete, and was the very last song to be finished for the album.

Out Getting Tacos with my Homie Seth Rogen

The fourth project that I started for this album and the first track I’ve ever recorded where all instruments are actual instruments instead of digital plugins. I recorded everything but the vocals in a single night back in January without any idea of what I was going to be playing going into the office. The lyrics themselves took until May to actually finish writing, going through several drafts before settling on the final product. This project took 7 hours to complete.

Hope Don't Float

I’ve had the idea for this song in my head for several years now but could never figure out just how to get it sounding the way I wanted. By coincidence I ended up plunking a few notes down to test out some things I had read about developing simple synths, and they became the melody and bassline heard during the verses of the track. I wasn’t sure how to work in the chorus because the simple beat didn’t have the drum sound I was looking for, but luckily when I downloaded the free VSTs through Spitfire LABS there was a perfect fit in their percussion sounds that filled out the whole vibe for what I needed. After hearing them laugh one day while working on the track, I asked my friend Kit to provide the audio clip heard at the very beginning of the song. This project took 11 hours and 27 minutes to complete.

I had been listening to a lot of soundtrack music for TV shows, specifically the Westworld and Severance soundtracks, and I wanted to do something in the same vein. I had also recently downloaded a large amount of free orchestral VSTs that created much more realistic piano, string, and orchestral instrument sounds than I had been used to working with. I spent an afternoon diving headfirst into my work and this is the result. This project took 4 hours and 6 minutes to complete.

The Forest

This was the first project I worked on when deciding to complete an album back in December 2021, and also the second track to be completely finished. Though it sounds like it was meticulously thought, the electric piano melody line during the verse sections was made using the FL Studio randomizer, which I hit on accident when trying to quantize a badly played C# minor chord. The blips and weird wah wah sounding noises underneath the chaos at the end of the song were created by humming into a microphone and then adding heavy distortion and auto-tune. This project took 15 hours and 14 minutes to complete.

Guillotine

I came up with this little guitar ditty earlier in 2022 and had a rough recording in place for album listenings when trying to decide on a track order and working on mastering, however the actual song heard on the album was recorded the day before the album was uploaded to Soundcloud, on June 5th 2022. The percussive noises heard are just me slapping my acoustic guitar. There was minimal work to be done in FL Studio for this, only adding effects and the steam train sound I sourced from YouTube, so the project time is listed at 30 minutes though with recording both my early version and my finished product I would put it closer to 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Westbound

Originally titled “Goose”, the beat for this track was the second project I started on for the album way back in December 2021. For the main part of the song I wanted the beat to feel a little uneasy but still pleasant to listen to, so I went with a chord progression that completely ignores the root chord of the key it’s in, making it seem unresolved. Though I started it in December, I didn’t actually record the lyrics until May 2022 as I couldn’t figure out exactly how to work some of the rhyme schemes. It’s about butts. This project took 16 hours and 33 minutes.

Booty

This track was surprisingly difficult to finish. It started off much more upbeat and happy, then slowly as more additions were made and earlier parts were removed it took on a much more melancholy vibe. It went through several revisions, one of which being the removal of an extensive rock part at the end of the track complete with drum fills and recorded electric guitar parts, but it just didn’t fit the vibe and I went with the acoustic guitar fade out that you hear in the finished product. This project took 11 hours and 4 minutes.

Zen Diagram

This was the third project I ended up starting for the album and the first one that was completely finished. It started off as just the rising scale with the hard saw synth at the end of the song, simply as a way to figure out more of how to apply modes, in this case Lydian on D#. Everything started to come together and really had a sort of uneasy feeling to it, hence the addition of the background sort of wispy dissonant arpeggiators that fade in and out. This project took 17 hours and 13 minutes to complete.
