This new recording is from a surprisingly fun evening at this way too posh Hotel/Lobby/Restaurant gig in Lisbon a couple of months ago. Things were finally coming back to normal in the city and, I think, this is one of the first 'real' gigs in two years. Fuck it’s been a long time. I got invited by a friend to come play and we had a nice dinner before. He come back from a party on the beach so we had a great time. I started playing around 09.30 and the place was still pretty empty. Just a couple of seats and a few spots at the bar were taken.

The thing you should know is that this was actually exactly like the place in the Netherlands where I had been playing every weekend three times for 11 years. I felt like a fish in the water and really not much had changed. People are on their phones more but still didn’t pay much attention to the music. Perfect! So I started with this super unobtrusive track by Al Green with him telling a beautiful story about his music. Inch by inch I started to make my way into their consciousness.

Back in the day one of my managers referred to the crowd as being like a frog in slowly boiling water. When it goes gradually, the frog just sits there and does nothing. Contrary to when the boiling moment for the room in this social club kind of situation hit people just got up spontaneously and started dancing. A beautiful sight it must have been. Though I missed it because I was too focused on my gear, as usual. And then we partied on for a bit more. See where you can hear in the set where that happens ;)

The soundtrack for the night was a mix of over 9 years of collecting music. It was very satisfying to go through all these tracks and make a story. With music. Because that's what I love doing most. I imagine the situation beforehand and start to compile a story of what I want to play. In hundreds of lists, there are all sorts of stories already written for other parties which I can use to make a new story. I'd use new tracks that I want to work with. Normally, I pick one track and let that decide where we will be heading that evening. And this being a four-hour set, I can have the first hour just playing really beautiful music that slowly starts to build the night. See where I am going with slow cooking the room? That first hour can be used to get everyone where I want them to be. Good soul music makes them feel really really nice. That’s what it does to me so I expect nothing less from my fellow travellers. And let’s speak through to heart here. We can use these sorts of nights. 

So I started with tracks that everyone sort of knows but has no idea where to place in their brains. And so I play with the idea that they like it because they sort of know it and it’s fresh because they are not sure. This all being subliminal, of course. They are just sitting and eating in a restaurant for all they know. The feedback I get the first hour or two, two and a half is limited. I do a couple of tricks during the night to gauge the awareness to see who is awake. Most of the time one person responds but everyone also feels it. That’s how music works.

I played some DJ Sneak - Funky Rhythm. Got to love that old school States house. Go check him out if you like proper house and disco to really build towards the end of my story. As I last track I tried to start Nina Simone but then the manager and the bouncer gave me a look that made clear the last track had already been played. 

But anyway, I am drifting off here. Just go listen if you hadn’t already turned it on. As always, sit down in front of some good speakers, close your eyes and let the music do the work. Or put it on when you’re hanging out with friends in the evening drinking and hanging out on, say, a Friday, I’ll guarantee you that at some point everyone will just stand up and start dancing. That’s when we’ve hit the boiling point and everyone comes to life. Enjoy!

Happy New Year to all you music lovers and funky ravers! This one is for you. I found some really cool tracks the past month and a half that I just had to share with you. And may I say I am really pleased with it? I am just going to! Most tracks make me put my hand in the air and do my ravers face so, hell yeah, it good! This is what Space Kadett sounds like when you set him loose at a proper rave.  

Kudos and much love to Amselcom. The have been sending amazing stuff again and I want to express my gratitude for being on their promo list. I am constantly getting gifts in my inbox and I love it! Especially Bajor has me really pumped.

bawab is being amazing again. The guys just keeps on releasing great stuff and I haven’t even used his latest EP. Will keep that for #034. Daniel Hokum is good as ever with his trippy not quite acid melody. And so is Coss. Do I hear a little Insomnia sample there? And I added a track that to me is a classic. Raise your hand if you feel the same way about Just Emma’s Black Raven!

Trippin Jaguar is steady as ever. And Amsterdam-based The Other Side brought to great guys together: Anthoni Logos & Nash for a track that every time it comes by in my playlist triggers me to check it out and be like, that shit it dope! And thanks Pingipung Records for existing and releasing Y Bülbül. The Heath is this month’s kicker at the end.

Down the Rabbit Hole 2023 - Saturday

On the 11th of July, one of my best friends Daniel Zuur (aka @krautmusica) passed away. He'll be missed forever for his funny character, his serious moments and his overall wisdom.

On the 21st of July, we celebrated his life with 300 of his best friends. This set is a tribute to all we learned from each other through music over the years. The tracks are tracks that he made, he liked to play, or I played for him at parties he organised.

Daan, I'll miss you. Thanks for being in my life!

I discovered @beyondcollectiveberlin who make very nice compilations. Picked a few from those too. Great stuff. @billbrewster made a @latenighttales After Dark compilation called Vespertine too. Found a very nice grooving track on there from Jeb Joy Nichols remixed by Hotel Motel or it's a Hotel Motel remix. Who can tell?

My dear departed friend Daniel Zuur aka @krautmusica kicks things off with his posthumous album Genesis, Seed of Life (432Hz). It's tuned to the frequency of the universe and the whole album is definitely worth a good listen. It's released on the Barcelonian imprint Alae Records (@twoalaes).

And I found out that I have some production chops in me too and taking the opportunity here to share the world's first Space Kadett track. More to come!

After an amazing Summer where I had the honour of playing at half a dosen festivals and travelled to the Netherlands, Hungary, Germany, and Poland for the music, I am happy that at least on of the shows got recorded.

I have said it before, but the show at @wildeburg was epic. A month or so before I got to see @gillespeterson and that was an inspiration for the set I played at the Kas. And it worked! It was packed. People loved it. I am very thankful to @houseofchicollective and legends @martingrozdan and @timdehoon for booking me.

The biggest one is seeing the @newlive.band growing steadily every month. We had one or two gigs every month since its inception and it looks good for next year too!

Space Kadett had some amazing gigs this Summer, too. It's a dream to play abroad and be invited to travel to the few places that did. A few were very much next-level and it is great to see the growth.

Time for a new Telecast! It’s number 45 already so we should be hitting the half centennial mark somewhere this year. This month it features a couple of new artists that I fell in love with, mainly, Zedjue. His downtempo tracks are amazing and feature a lot of electric guitars and funky synths.

My good friends Polynation came out of hibernation and have released a new EP for the first time since 2019 and it’s a beauty! I featured the first and last track of the EP as the last and first track of the podcast.

I added a David Lynch track as a tribute to someone who has inspired millions and freaked out millions more with his wacky stuff.

Welcome to the fourth TELECAST. A new series of podcasts that will be released mostly monthly. With the humble aim of combining the music I find, love and want to share into a set for everyone to enjoy. Hopefully, it will become your go-to place for a fix of good music.

About Telecast - #004
A while back, in a country not too far away, I found a record label that struck a chord with me. Their name is @Analog-Africa and their slogan is equally striking: The future of music happened decades ago... How right they are! They showcase an amazing mix of African music that’s being (re)released outside the limits of Africa and mostly finds its origins in the 70s. This label goes beyond music by releasing rare photographs, interviews and full discographies. Occasionally, they take a trip to South America as well.

To me, this shows the love for a continent and it’s music the way it should be. Being truthful to musicians, all releases are fully licensed, and being brought back into the spotlight that otherwise might have never seen the attention they deserve outside of the dark continent.

Needless to say, when I found the label I was inspired and so I decided to make a tribute to them. For this set I picked music from a number of releases from Amara Touré released between 1973 and 1980, music from Benin released somewhere between 1969-1981 and Colombian music released between 1960-1985. You'll also find random tracks I fell in love with from this label.

Telecast - #004 - Special Edition

Recording of my set during a magical Wildeburg 2018. This was truly an amazing experience having so many friends around at half past five in the morning. My dear friend @Kraut joined me on percussion for the first part. Sprinkling even more positive vibes over the crowd. Everything fell together perfectly in this moment making a heartfelt connection with the people in front of me.

So for who was there: Thanks soooo much! Hope to see you soon in another space or time. As always, thanks for sharing if you like this. It helps me a ton! <3

Space Kadett - Wildeburg Festival 2018 - Healing Stage

My friend Kraut (@krautmusica) and I had the incredible honour to open the Dickicht floor on Friday morning. @alter-ego-amsterdam invited us to gently wake up the campsite and to get people going again. What followed was an intimate 2 hour back to back session that filled us with warm, fuzzy feelings. It’s amazing to be among friends and such great people and to be able to perform for them at a festival like Garbicz. It blew my mind on so many levels, is transformational like no other and for that reason, it makes this recording a very special one. Enjoy!

As we sit at home, we find ourselves anew and see things in a new light. So did I. Inspired by numerous sets out there, I’ve been going into my own musical history to find forgotten gems of my youth (Mark Knopfler & Pete Philly & Perquisite), new artists I fell in love with (J.J. Cale & Kevin Morby), timeless classics (Nina Simone & George Harrison), and music with Dutch lyrics (Spinvis & Wim de Craene).

This special Telecast stems from a desire to listen to and work with different music. The music I normally listen to just isn’t cutting it at the moment and is propelling me to shake things up a little. My desire to listen to something that gives comfort and is emotionally uplifting to help me through times of distress is what brought this mix to light. 

This Telecast is filled with music that invokes memories from my past. From the time I set sail every weekend with my best friend from high school, the time when I was singing of the top of my lungs while driving around artists for a festival, the time when I felt pure happiness just walking around a train station listening to music on my way to meet friends, a time when I found out that the group of people I hung out with weren’t who I thought they were, a time when I rode back to Portugal and didn’t get further than Ghent, a time when I had no idea who I was and found solace in music, a time when I found big emotions within me through music with Dutch lyrics, a time when… well, you get the gist.

It’s been emotional, it’s been beautiful and although I could keep working on this Telecast and endlessly tweak it, it’s now time to release it and share this with you. I hope you’ll find comfort when listening and realise that even though these times are though, they also shine new light on you and offer you a chance to change things around for the better. And, hopefully, in doing so, when things do go back to normal again you’ll find yourself stronger than ever.

Here we are again. The stress of the pandemic seems to have lessened a little bit and I hope everyone is free to go out again. Here in Lisbon we are free to go but markets and restaurant close early. Clubs and bars are still closed unless they can do something during the day and act like a restaurant. So the parties aren't really here and we're pretty much b bound to house parties, which is also nice but just not the same. 

We are looking into doing outside day parties with @kosmokollektive soon but as with everything at the moment, nothing is sure. I guess that brings some form of solace. On the this month's Telecast:

I wanted to combine my new ideas from the past couple of month with my old idea of what I thought a Telecast could be. I'm not sure if I succeeded but I'm happy with the result. It starts slow as usual and I wanted to infuse a more acoustic feel and at the same time keep an electronic beat mix vibe going on.

One of my new favourites is Berlin-based Brigade (@brigadeberlin). It's always nice to discover a new producer and when you check your library he's already in there a couple of times. They have such a nice bouncy optimistic vibe going on. Go check them out.

I also found an old gem towards the end. I am not sure what Rubberroom means but this one track is amazing. It has a really nice guitar riff and once the acid distortion kicked, I was sold. It's somewhere towards the end.
