Damien Gilley is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in Portland, Oregon. We sat down to talk his process and motivations during his installation of “Invisible City”. The exhibition incorporates two grayscale wall drawings, gathered from his sketchbook and monumentalized on the gallery walls. “Invisible City” will run from August 9th to December 31st in the main event space.

An Interview with Damien Gilley

Gail Spaien is known for making paintings that depict an idealized view of the natural world and a denial of unpleasant things. Her current work examines the symbolism and contradiction embedded in the floral still-life tradition touching on themes of wellbeing and mortality, pleasure and loss. She is a member of SPACE Studios and Professor of painting and core faculty in the MFA program at the Maine College of Art. Here she discusses the nuance of inspiration and narrative in her work, her experience in the community of SPACE Studio artists, and the intersection of instruction and personal practice at MECA.

Gail Spaien on Imagery & Perception

German artist Sandra Erbacher sat down with SPACE's Martha Schnee to unpack imagery in her show, Geometry of Oppression. Listen to hear more about Sandra's own upbringing, the secrecy around the historic archive at IBM, her experience visiting a concentration camp, and the origins of the projected imagery in the show (pictured right).

Sandra Erbacher is a German artist living and working in New Jersey and New York. She has degrees in Sociology and Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths College, London, and earned her BFA from Camberwell College of Art, London (2009) and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2014). She has exhibited nationally and internationally, at Spring/Break, NYC, Grin Providence, the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, the Chazen Museum of Art, Madison, Mana Contemporary Chicago, Circuit 12 Contemporary, Dallas, The Contemporary, London, Kunstverein Speyer, Germany, Umbrella Gallery, Leeds, and Five Years, London. She is a current LMCC Workspace resident (2017-18).

Her work is included in the Fidelity Investments Corporate Art Collection and numerous other private collections.
