A seasoned selector in her homebase of Naarm/Melbourne, Jazz (@spaceswithinspace) is a rising presence in the electronic music scene at large. A regular fixture on the radio (as PBS 106.7FM ‘Spaces Within Space’ host and resident on both Skylab and Hope Street) as well as in the booth at countless parties and events, her creative mixing style and quirky, always on-point selections have seen her become a much-loved contributor to the bustling Naarm/Melbourne scene.

Expertly blending bleepy synthesisers, broken percussion and playful psychedelia, Jazz’s Patterns of Perception 84 is a perfect snapshot of her idiosyncratic style and taste. Recorded on a dark and rainy morning during Melbourne’s recent fifth lockdown, this set steers Jazz's musical narrative into a dark, dystopian direction, offering an energetic interpretation of the unpredictable reality that we find ourselves in.

Patterns of Perception 84 - Jazz

Here is the ninth chapter of our podcast series, a new story told by @dj-heartbreak-berlin, committed record digger and music journalist based in Berlin.

For this episode, he wanted to refer to the classic tape format, therefore he imagined a two-sided mix. This meticulous blend of selected findings and oddities, features both the gloomy vibes and the hypnotic grooves that define Futurepast for him.

The first part takes you from the chilly shores of white noise and dramatic strings to the more electric and rhythmic lands of IDM and electronica. The second part is a progressive buildup of dub atmospheres and experimental beats, all finely sewed together to transport you in an alternative time.

As the sun goes down the forest starts to come to life, it becomes harder to follow the path that you took in and you find yourself in unfamiliar territory. 

You panic for a moment as you realise you have lost your sense of direction. Before you know it, it's dark and you are lost, deep in beating heart of the forest.. After a short while you give up panicing, the paranoia falls away as you surrender to what is happening. 

So you start to follow the mind bending sounds that are echoing through the trees, creatures eyes appear in the darkness, and begin to light the way, by this point you are finding it hard to differentiate between what is real and what is some kind of hallucinatory apparition. 

After what feels like forever you emerge from the dense undergrowth in to a moonlit clearing, the sounds are loud now, all talking to each other in some kind of hypnotic composition. To your surprise you find a DJ surrounded by what seem to be mythical creatures.. You start to question if perhaps you were supposed to get lost in the woods, and by being lost you found exactly what you were looking for.. Last week you could already enjoy @woodyninetytwo’s DJ set, and next in line is the gifted, Rotterdam-based @nelly_dragon Together with visual artist Leeza Pritychenko, Nelly delivered a versatile set that started out exploring the tranquil regions of ambient sounds, navigating various percussion rhythms and ended up diving into the depths of complex techno and trance. Today we are proudly welcoming Timnah Sommerfeldt from Basel with her signature approach to earthy dance music. We have been following her work since long before the Warning times so it's an honor to have her on the mix series with a 68min trip through Breakbeats, Dub Techno and Trance. Selected and mixed with the type of skill one only achieves by years of dedication and experience. So young DJs out there, sit down, listen and learn how it's done. But in first place, enjoy this wonderful example of emotional story telling.
