TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ ROLANDO

Rolando grew up in south west Detroit, a Hispanic district, he was heavily influenced by his cultural Latin rhythms and percussion. Inspired from an early age by his musician father, he pursued his own interest in music and became well known and respected within the community. It was later when he heard Jeff Mills in 1985 as "The Wizard" that he discovered the innovative sounds of Techno. Through a mutual friend he was introduced to Mike Banks and joined Underground Resistance in 1994. 
2014 he launched his own label R3 ( Roland Rocha Records ) and will exclusively release his own music on his label. 
Rolando now a Dj for almost thirty years continues to work internationally as a Dj and continues to hold a residency at the notorious and enigmatic Berlin club Berghain; as of 2016 he will also be a resident at the lauded and Seminal Parisian Rex Club.

Of all the one-word techno project names out there, Truncate has to be among the most descriptive. The name started as a name for David Flores's most pared-back tracks, different from the stuff he was making as Audio Injection at the time. As happens with people who are really good at techno—or just understand the genre fundamentally—Truncate's DJ tools took off quickly, because people in the scene could recognize the craftsmanship. You don't need more than a few elements to make something pop. Rather quickly, Truncate became Flores's main squeeze, bringing him to a new level of international attention and acclaim.

Flores is part of a vibrant LA techno community that's probably never been more vibrant or diverse. He helped build the scene alongside producers like Drumcell, and now the city is home to several great techno parties every weekend. You'll see his name on the flyer of quite a few of them, though probably less now that he's an international star. His RA Podcast represents the ethos of not just the Truncate project, but his work writ large: stripped-back tunes, yes, but also electro and some choice vocal cuts. It's a vibrant look at capital-T techno, an approach to the genre that's about building on foundations instead of sticking to templates.

Throughout the years, Detroit-born Berlin-based groove operator and Tresor / Globus resident Eric Cloutier has been honing and refining his palette as both a producer and a DJ. Not one to engage in dogmatic restraint, Cloutier keeps developing his vision through carefully curated selections and an equally impeccable mixing technique. Boasting the variety and precision of his releases for his own imprint Palinoia, the present mix was recorded live at The Chinese Laundry in Sydney last year. Playing the main room open-to-close, Cloutier put together this mix as an evolving story and, much like the crowd of that night which proved highly receptive to the narrative, we hope this one will resonate with you. A most exquisitely complex and deep-diving plunge into Cloutier’s shape-shifting headspace, alternating heavyweight punch and dubbed-out minimalism with swashes of textured membranes and faux-organic, modular-like intricacies, this mix is as elusively impossible to pigeonhole as it proves sophisticated in its design.

Me and Ben thought it would be fun to play a long DJ set together at Globus, the upstairs floor at Tresor in Berlin. 
We last played together (as Frequency 7) in May 2013. This time we played a ‘back to back’ DJ set, I’m pretty sure playing 2 tracks each for the whole six and a half hour set. All we had in mind beforehand was to start with some Dub and ‘see where it goes’. 

It was a lot of fun so we wanted to share the recording with you.

On May 30, Akua lit up Room 01 with a fierce blend of 90s-inspired techno, acid basslines, twisted bleeps, and relentless machinal funk. Sharing the lineup with VIL, Phara, and Marie-Julie, she carved out her own space, evoking Detroit and Midwest techno’s deconstructed roughness and the continuum of rave culture. Her set was a bold convergence of classic heritage and edgy futurism, and we're all for it.

DVS1 came up as a raver in the Midwest, throwing techno parties for over 20 years and getting up to mischief, often next to huge stacks of speakers that still influence him to this day. He is now well-established as a vital DJ and resident at Berghain and Panorama Bar. 

This mix is something special and a side of DVS1 normally not heard or recorded! A true digger and passionate record collector running the eclectic Mistress Recordings and the more pure techno label HUSH. Here he crosses into house territory for a special dekmantel mix. 

Of the podcast we have here, he says, “This mix is two hours of a four hour rare “house” set recorded LIVE in Sept 2017 at an undisclosed location. I make it a point not to release many mixes and while most people know and follow me for my techno sets, this mix is for those who dig a little deeper and appreciate it all… Enjoy!" There is still a real sense of pace to the mix as it glides effortlessly though flurries of percussion into vocal numbers, cosmic curveballs and piano laced anthems. It’s a fascinating insight into a whole other side of one of techno’s foremost talents.

Dekmantel Podcast 186 - DVS1

Efdemin has all but perfected his deep, expertly reduced take on house and techno. The German artist has mastered his form over the course of numerous 12”s on various labels, including three albums on Dial Records. They are intricate, mind bending affairs that take you in on yourself and constantly explore new ground. His hybrid mix CD on his own Naïf imprint and Curle last year was another career high point, and recently he has turned himself towards experimental and microtonal composition with yet more fascinating results. February 2019 will see Ostgut Ton release New Atlantis, his latest album and one inspired by Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name. Promising to fuse his left-of-centre take on dance music with a new found passion for experimental sound art, it’s the latest chapter in a fascinating artistic story. 

His podcast for us is a decidedly club-focussed mix, featuring the sort of warped synths and underlapping grooves you would expect of the man. There are multi-layered tracks of percussion, sound design and stringy rhythms to start, then things slip into long, draw out passages of tunnel vision techno before the drums begin to hit harder to carry you home. At times playful, at others deadly serious, it sums up the career of Efdemin perfectly.
