A stalwart of the international techno scene, Ø [Phase] is a name synonymous with quality driving, stripped back music. He has been making his way in the industry since the late 90’s but it wasn’t until the turn of the century when he began loading up the record bags of the best DJ’s in the world with tunes like ‘Module Overload’, ‘Katino II’ and ‘The Passenger’. 

From his deadly rhythms to his mind-bending design work Ø [Phase] feeds his creations from a multitude of angles. His natural habitat is pitch black dancefloors the world over and he is poised to shake things up again with his new project Phyxix alongside Matrixmann.

DJ firebrand Takaaki Itoh has come a long way since his early days of Detroit-influenced techno and parties in northern Japan. Without compromising anything in the way of quality his appeal has grown exponentially. Like a musical surgeon, his approach relies less on sweeping gestures and more on small millimetric cuts and tweaks that slowly ramp up the mood and leave the listener with sound that is at turns growling, mystical and amorphous. Charles McCloud Duff, aka Matrixxman, started his musical career as a hip hop producer for names like YG and TY$. But shortly after, he got bored of the routine and laid his eyes on electronic music. He started experimenting with facets of UK bass music before growing into one of the big names in the techno realm. Matrixxman is no stranger to us as he already played (and ate a sandwich) at our festival back in 2018 but now he’s back for The Crave Mix 008.

@norman-nodge occupies a special place in Berlin techno with a sound that is at once forceful, dubby and hypnotic. These days a lawyer by trade, Nodge spent the 90s as a DJ and promoter before becoming a Berghain resident in 2005. Born in East German Leipzig, raised in Brandenburg, Norman got bitten by the techno bug after the wall came down. In 1994 he started to promote several events and launched his career as a DJ. At these parties, he got to know Marcel Fengler and Marcel Dettmann and literally became their mentor for all things techno.

Marcel Dettmann eventually pitched him to Berghain’s management and he returned to DJing and became a resident instantaneously. Since then, he plays Berghain once a month, specialising in the almost forgotten art of warming up at the beginning of a night. In 2005 he also started to produce his own tracks. His maturity proved to be very beneficial in terms of his artistic vision, as he made up his mind about what he likes and what not a long time ago already. Unsurprisingly, his outings on Dettmann’s MDR label, as well as his track “Native Rhythm Electric” for Ostgut Ton left a deep impression with headstrong techno lovers. With his dusty funk, static hiss and the rich thump of his kick drums, he managed to get himself recognised as one of techno’s more unique auteurs.

Norman Nodge cites Detroit techno (Jeff Mills, Rob Hood, 430 West), Chicago House (Relief, Dance Mania) and Techno (Luke Slater, Peacefrog, Mark Broom) as his most essential influences. Hence, it is not surprising that he fuses the old with the new and the soft with the tough when he plays out. “It is my goal as a DJ to make people dance without walking on trodden paths of recent trends. I want to sensitize dancers for unusual sounds, old and new.”

SPND20 Mixtape by The Advent

Gaetano Parisio, is one of the most consistent artists in techno, releasing records since the 90s that remain staples in every respectable DJ’s record box. Co-creator of the Neapolitan Techno School, he is now prepared to present a GAETEK LIVE and ORIGENS.
Starting as Gaetek, Gaetano (from Napoli, Italy) released a flurry of classics on labels like Planet Rhythm and Primate Recordings, records that were immediately elevated into regular rotation by icons like Dave Clarke, Sven Vath and even Jeff Mills himself.
He soon launched his first label, CONFORM, which quickly became a beacon for the Napolitano techno scene for which Parisio and Marco Carola were now torchbearers.
They became fixtures at the world’s best clubs and festivals with a four-turntable/two-mixer set-up that left crowds screaming for more while their studio work together lead them to befriended like-minded artists like Adam Beyer, Ben Sims, and The Advent, all of whom released music on Conform. During the same time, Gaetano brought the techno scene together on a charity compilation, Techcommunity 4 Kosovo, to aid the children of war-torn Kosovo—a rare and shocking flare-up of violence within the relatively peaceful boundaries of modern Europe.
If Conform was about community, Gaetano’s next label, ART (Advanced Techno Research), was a one-man affair that issued a series of nine limited-edition, precision-crafted, two-track singles, over the span of two years. He continued the conceptual approach to production with the book-inspired Chapter series, released on his new SOUTHSOUL label, which introduced a deep house-flavored techno sound that was eagerly endorsed by DJs of all stripes. Next came the five-part ADAGIO series of minimal tracks (on the label of the same name), which continued Gaetano’s evolution as a producer at the same time techno was reinventing itself for the new Millennium.
In 2007, Gaetano took a step away from the frenetic life of an international DJ. During that time, he continued recording hundreds of tracks for the pleasure of the music intelligentsia, only. In 2017, he moved to Barcelona, Spain and set-up a new studio where he produced brand new music with several collaborators that will be revealed shortly. He also republished the back catalogs of his labels (this time in digital format, too), setting the stage for the new GAETEK LIVE and ORIGENS (a three turntables dj set just as he used to play in the beginning of his career) intended to introduce his 25-year-plus music career to techno’s next generation.
