Prior to the Battle for Port Hudson, La. near Baton Rouge, "Allie" Barnard describes the disorganized fighting supporting Commodore (later Admiral) Farragut's fleet as it 'ran the guns' upriver, with the U.S.S. Mississippi running aground. Scuttled, the 24 tons of gunpowder in its hull exploded, creating a sonic wave heard 20 miles away, as graphically described by Capt. Barnard. Also described are interesting foraging details regarding accommodations, victuals, and sleeping with pigs.
