Jeff and I are happy to present our first live arena gig! Not really, but you can imagine.  This one started when Jeff was telling me about how he and Jo (sonic structures and silent stretches ) were writing some of their poetry in a stream off consciousness style, writing a line and then handing it off back and forth until it was done.   I suggested maybe we try something like that with the guitars.   So we did.  We exchanged ideas until it felt done and here's where we landed.   
This one was a lot of fun to pull together and really just kind of not think about it as we wrote.

Pathways

free form shortwave radio composition created using RF sweeps/noise, dialogue. The first half of this composition is a live radio feed, both very slow and rapid dial sweeps utilized to manipulate tone contrast, feedback and noise, during the 2nd half the initial track is looped then accompanied by a fuzzy rhythmic radio loop and other sounds I generated around my home (a singing tea kettle solo from my kitchen, and grackles from the yard)

All sounds from a Casio SK-1. Vocals were sampled and played back through the SK-1 as well.

Minimal additional effects were used.
A bit of reverb on almost everything. Delay on the whispered vocals. Chorus on the "brass ensemble."

To free myself from the limitations of the stock rhythms, I sampled and resequenced all of the rhythm sounds (i.e. "kick," "snare," etc.).

The goal was to only use the SK-1, and to refrain from modifying the original character of the keyboard with excessive effects.

Spasmodular, a.k.a. Spasmodular Sounds from Steve's Shortwave, composes soundscapes featuring radio frequency sounds captured among the shortwave spectrum. In addition to using analog shortwave radios as a medium, various electronic instruments and field recordings are utilized as well during the compositional process. Spasmodular is also affiliated with the experimental electronic collective VCO (Vincent Carlton Oscillator).
