An excerpt of the first live performance of 'A wave and waves' by Michael Pisaro (USA) for 100 percussionists, presented by Speak Percussion and Melbourne Festival 2015.

In this rare, deep listening experience the audience sits among the performers to experience the music as if part of an ocean of sound. Colossal percussive waves are created by layers of imperceptibly soft sounds— sandpaper on stone, seeds falling on glass, bowed bells—forming a textural landscape bristling with detail.

A wave and waves is a work of monumental scale, experienced with intimate immediacy—as countless tiny moments of friction, gravity and vibration heave into life like a single, pulsing organism.

Anicca is a percussion duo created by Matthias Schack-Arnott that aurally and kinetically explores cycles, orbits and the perception of time. Hypnotic and dreamlike, Anicca features a variable-speed rotating instrument created with engineer Richard Allen, augmented by a rotational lighting system and multi-channel audio.

Anicca – meaning ‘impermanence’ – is inspired by the relationship between the cyclic and the transcendental in Hindu and Buddhist thought. Through interlocking musical gestures, performers Schack-Arnott and Eugene Ughetti play the instrument’s spinning, textured surface, creating timbral cannons, mechanical phasing effects and microtonal pitch cycles. The result is a shimmering reflection on impermanence, recurrence and perpetual motion.

Anicca - Matthias Schack-Arnott (excerpt)

Informed by the bold and often disputed aesthetic value of Brutalist Architecture, Brutti ma Buoni is a percussion trio that was originally composed as the sound component to a video piece by Coco & Maximilian and U-P. The composition and film were commissioned by Hotel Hotel for Assemble Papers' 'Brutalist Block Party' series in May 2016.

A solo work by Matthias Schack-Arnott, Fault Traces uses subsonic frequencies to trigger vibrational patterns on layers of percussive objects and strewn material. Bells, cymbals, bamboo and glass are used to form shimmering kinetic systems, resulting in extremes of pitch and density. Inspired by our physical and psychological relationship to the subterranean.
