Last time, we talked about false friends—words that look similar in English and your native language, but mean something very different. Get the text on my website:&nbsp; Example 1: Actual This one’s a classic false friend. In Spanish, “actual” or in Portuguese “atual” means “current” or “present.” But in English, “actual” means real or true — not “current.” So if you say: 👉 “My actual job is very interesting,” you probably mean: “My current job.”

As you may know, I always recommend you listening for improving your English. There are many studies, which suggest that there is a correlation between our level of the language and the hours we have been listening. In other words, the more you listen, the better. The more hours you spend listening, the more quickly you improve.

Here’s an interesting question you might ask: “How many times do I have to listen to every piece of content?” Do I have to listen just one time? Or more than one time?

What most students do is listen to certain content once or twice and then change to another content. The typical student thinks that the more variety, the better.

Well, variety is good, but what you want is to consolidate what you listen, and the most effective way to achieve it, is through repetition.

As a language student, the main activities to learn a new language are: reading, writing, listening and speaking. This is what we naturally do in our mother tongue.

One key aspect to keep in mind is that we can categorize these activities as input and output. As you may guess, listening and reading are input activities, and writing and speaking are output activities.

In other words, when you’re listening or reading, you are being exposed to the language, and when you’re writing and speaking, you are “producing” the language.

The traditional approach tells you that the more you write and speak, the better. That’s why language schools insist on writing a lot and “practicing” your speaking with other students, sometimes in groups.

This seems reasonable, but it’s not effective. There’s a lot of research that points out the contrary: Basically, in order to develop your English, you need to do input activities most of the time.
