San Diego’s https://soundcloud.com/speakerghost follows the “Dreamcatcher” EP from 2014 with this three-tracker of genre-defying, uptempo, eclectic and exciting tunes. Track one, “Spinal” takes a journey to the early 2000s and grabs some energy from the stripped back 2 Step of Housepower Productions and DnD’s avant-garde dubs. He transports it back to 2016 and infuses it with some up-to-the-minute rave leaning, UK bass textures and a few tongue-in-cheek samples, one courtesy of Mike Tyson. The track starts out smoothly in a UK garage fashion and eventually transitions to a ravey segment before descending into a gritty sequence of deep, dubstep bass and just a little dab of video game sounds. Definitely a good one for the climb up to the peak of the night. 

“White Leather” is a tightly wound stew of tough house, classic, rolling hardcore breaks, quirky voice samples (about drinking too much) and dislocated synth textures. It’s hard to tell if this one is from 1989 or this minute. The wobbling bass sounds definitely give it away as a modern production, but it pays homage to the uptempo, breakbeat tunes and bouncy house numbers that would have rocked the early UK rave scene in the halcyon days of the post-hardcore continuum’s embryonic stage. And regardless of its vintage there is no debating its pedigree; this one will rock the party right any time of the night. 

The title track rounds things out, kicking off with a beat that brings Gino Soccio’s Italo monster “Remember” to mind before veering off into a deep, swinging exploration of the points where deep house, UK garage and bass meet. UK bass textures check in and of the mix, the bass line has a tough speed garage roll to it and the dreamy vocal sample has an MK-like feel. This amalgam of perfect elements makes “Midnight” perfect for late night and an early morning dance floors.  - Chris Orr

Nani Castle wrote "Crying In The Dark" as a meditation on modern times. After hearing the Freestyle-influenced beat from longtime collaborator Udachi and feeling overwhelmed by world events, she sat down in her home studio on Staten Island, pouring out lyrics to reflect in a moment of alienation. "People are afraid to show weakness and emotion. Instead, dimly lit screens house our dependance for approval," Nani muses. Digital age language like 'On Fleek,' 'Rari,' and 'Molly,' act as commentary on the viral youthful detachment from true feelings; the collective escapism of our generation. The video, directed by another longtime collaborator & Los Angeles-based artist Dominique Dawson, plays off this narrative as Nani deals her concentrated tears in doses, forcing it's takers to confront deep wounds and reach a higher place.

On remixing duties we have UK's Tanka and San Diego's own Speakerghost. 

Speakerghost gives two distinct takes on the track. One being a deep house journey into groovy California desert parties, the other a heavy 808s breakbeat take reminiscent of early boy8bit. Tanka's Sweat Mix takes us to a whole other dark soundscape, he flips the chorus into an ominous intro before dropping into a dark 2 step rhythm ready to make the subs rattle.
