The ‘Make Techno Black Again’ mix is a tribute to the extended thoughts and techniques that went into the composition of Detroit techno. In the wake of the collapse of the Ford Industry and subsequent “white flight,” techno in response was political and rebellious. 

To quote Gerald Donald (Drexicya/ Dopplereffekt), “[Electronic music] in particular is a response to urban decadence and the entire spectrum of the socio-economic condition. It’s an expression of a dystopian condition.”

Expanding from these words, the mix is designed to be a self-reflective and non-linear tour of Detroit techno as a machine of momentum and an expansion of black music with the aid of newly acquired technology. Jeff Mills’ DJ sets with Underground Resistance in which hardware drum machines and synthesizers were hotwired into Mill’s own three vinyl deck setup was my main source of inspiration, wanting to recreate the fearless experimentalism of a live techno set from the 90s. Techno is assembly line music at its most beautiful and gritty.

Rhythmatic Music for Speakers

Speaker Music is a digital audio and extended media praxis inspired by Rhythmanalysis, a book of essays by urbanist philosopher Henri Lefebvre as well as considerations of momentum and the “chronopolitical” from cultural theorist Kodwo Eshun. Speaker Music desires to engineer affect and sculpt sentiment into a multitextural sound object in response to rhythmanalytic speculations and curatorial decisions within a given vibrational ontology. Speaker Music is the production of a rhythmic body, quivering the nexus event of the moment into a collapsed “nonpulsed time” toward a shared sphere of intimacy.

Rhythmatic Music for Speakers is a developing programmatic praxis rerouting sound and gesture into sonic paintings via iPad, or further abstractions through live mixing with Ableton. As a matter of staging a closed stereo field, a rhythmanalysis of each performance environment will be factored into the spatial situation of sampled audio alongside techniques for drumming inspired by percussionists such as Rashied Ali, Max Roach and Steve Poindexter.

Following the aspirations of the first compilation of Bizaarbazaar, #2 is a media experiment that attempts to preserve musical content against the unpredictable mutations of the web. It features the work of over 40 artists responding to the themes: ‘Sonic Fragments,’ and ‘Rhythmic Weaponry.’ 

While bizaarbazaar #1 was packaged as a zine and double cassette, its successor strays further from conventional music packaging to take the form of a t-shirt tied to a unique download code, and a radio transmission on NTS Radio. To celebrate as well as accompany the release, a listening session of bizaarbazaar #2 is held at Motto Berlin in collaboration with the Swiss magazine zweikommasieben.
