Since Technique first brought this Aussie producer to the world's attention, he's been unstoppable. His tracks have been dropped on Kiss, Radio 1, 1Xtra and wherever else good bass is purveyed to discerning listeners. He's been DJing alongside names like Matrix & Futurebound, Sigma and Drumsound & Bassline Smith. And as if that wasn't enough, he's back to increase the levels even further.

“Backfire” opens up into immediate action-flick energy, delivering epic orchestral tension backed with an insistent synthetic pulse. Spectrem melds finely-manipulated real-instrument samples with heavyweight programmed sounds to create an ultra-modern cinematic blockbuster of a tune. All that underpinned with barb-sharp, tightly-woven beats delivers a piece of work that's going to light up sets at any time of night.

Then we're on the “Run”. This is a hands-in-the-air callback to the nineties, showing that Spectrem knows, understands and respects the roots of this music. With a percussion line that'll have heads playing Spot the Break, and a vocal hook that's pure euphoria, this is no-compromise jungle music. Providing a balance between dancefloor toughness in the low end and soulful sparkle in the melodies, this is one to draw for when its time to transition between styles.

Spectrasoul - Burst (Calibre Remix) [Forthcoming IshChat]

As far as drum & bass goes, no label has a more distinct sound than Spearhead. BCee (aka Steve Jefroy) signed his first release for the imprint in 2005, carrying the flame for an emotionally-rich style of DNB that labels like C.I.A, Soul:r and Signature had started.

For the last 14 years Jefroy has shaped the sound of the label, releasing 4 full-length LPs amongst signings including S.P.Y, Seba and Alix Perez. Jefroy also manages Future Retro, Spearhead’s recently-revived sublabel and home of last month’s excellent 'Treats EP'.

Ahead of Spearhead’s next Room Two takeover next weekend, Jefroy sent us an hour-long mix in anticipation of their return. As he told us in our accompanying interview, there are few tags that fit his music perfectly, but we will say his mix rolls through a wholly musical and heartfelt side of the genre.

The 70th SUNANDBASS Podcast comes from DJ, producer, and Spearhead label head BCee.

Having released over 100 tracks and remixes over 4 albums, and countless other releases since his debut in 2002, it’s fair to say that BCee has made a huge contribution to the Drum & Bass scene. 

Alongside this epic body of work, his label Spearhead continues to grow from strength to strength, having bought artists such as SPY, Technimatic, Hybrid Minds and LSB, amongst countless others to the fore. 

BCee brings something a bit special to this month’s SUNANDBASS Podcast, with a mix of only his music – whether his originals, remixes of his tracks or tracks that he has remixed. He had this to say about it: ‘I wanted to do something different so I’ve given you 90 minutes of tracks that I've produced / remixed / had remixed etc.  It's something that I've never done in 17 years of releasing music!’
