If you’ve missed the self-titled debut, released by Island People in 2017 on raster, you’re in for a treat! Known for its surgical- precision explorations into post-digital manipulations, the celebrated label and a platform for many groundbreaking sounds has signed a mastering engineer Conor Dalton, Grammy Award-winning producer David Donaldson, musician and DJ Graeme Reedie, and a guitarist Ian “Chippy” Maclennan for a fascinating journey that brought much of their organic and warm sounds to the slightly cold, a little sterile, and desolate space. For their sophomore release, simply titled II, the group push their sounds into a further territory, resembling their home country of Scotland, “made of contrasting lights and harsh elements where time seems to stand still, circling the moment.” Beyond elements brought on from individual contributions, the group has relied on influences experienced together during their tour. Such slight melancholy can be grasped through pieces titled “Far From Shore,” “Stillness,” and “All My Plants Are Dead,” but today I am happy to offer you this exclusive premiere of a track named “Loneliness Has a Purpose,” which you can first experience it here on its own, and then, along the rest of the tracks on the full album.

"Out of the whole album, this track best represents the sound of paths not taken. Of one destination for some still feeling like a journey yet to be taken for others. The narratives we create reveal us all to be unreliable storytellers, it is only in looking back honestly that we can direct the ending. With the feeling of isolation during intense quarantine bringing up a lot of time for introspection, songs like “loneliness has a purpose” reflect on the many directions a life could take, potential futures not chosen and the many decisions that shape a future."

I was going to write a bit more about this exciting release, but I feel that I’d be simply paraphrasing the following words, already appearing on the group’s Bandcamp: “The arrangements unfold like the long tracking shots of an early Antonioni film […] gloomy, darker, richer textures have conquered their space…” Yeah, well said. An absolute gem for lovers of surrealist and organic noir-fi as well as pristine, process-oriented production – a culmination of the above four minds gathered in the same unique space! Once again, the physical album is scheduled to start shipping on June 25th.

The tumblefish made its way slowly downstream, away from the ferocious rapids of the mountainside and into spacious open deeper waters. It had been swimming away from troubled waters for its own life but now it was finally begin to reach a place in which it might be able to build a foundation, a place to breathe, a place to call home. This lake would be its resting place for now, the rippling current and the slow moving drift of the leaves floating above the waters surface. 

Steve Cobby and Mallinder have collaborated for a new ep which is being released by the Throne Of Blood camp. It will feature remixes by Max Pask, Mark E and Man Power.

Peter Michael Hamel emerged from the 70s Krautrock scene dreaming of “the blue flower growing between the milestones on the road to a future world-music”. A truly visionary artist who worked and studied with John Cage, Morton Feldman and Terry Riley, his 1980 Colours of Time LP - an epic, sprawling, 22-minute saga - was hailed by The Guardian’s Rob Fitzpatrick as “an absolute masterpiece of skull-bursting, synth-led ambient minimalism”. Thirty six years on, Astral Industries reinterpret Hamel's original vision with remixes from two contemporary heavyweights - Wolfgang Voigt and Rod Modell (aka Deepchord). Swiss artist and veteran producer Ripperton contacted the ESP Institute out of the blue mid-2017 to share a gorgeous mix of self-produced material, a collection of pieces made without any agenda outside of representing the self, not geared toward the dancefloor or a specific environment but simply a bi-product of introspective exploration. We were floored, the mix was on constant repeat in our world for weeks, then was subsequently pulled apart into separate titles to form this beautiful double LP, Ripperton’s debut with the label. The title 'Sight Seeing' speaks of someone stepping outside their current reality to look in the mirror, as if to ground themselves and keep sight of who they are in a world of extreme highs and lows. Inspired greatly by expansive landscapes and views from airplane windows (imagine your commute flying over the Alps every weekend), Ripperton describes this collection as postcards to himself, messages from his subconscious recorded on tape (both conceptually and literally), melancholy soundtracks to the Mondays that follow weekend journeys. While musical genres tend to cycle through bandwagon moments, the ESP Institute strives to operate independently of these, and while 'Sight Seeing' is undoubtably an Ambient album, we’re simply proud to revel in the chance moment where an esteemed artist such as Ripperton spreads his wings in a beautifully unexpected mode of expression.

We're very honoured to welcome Paris based DJ & Producer D.K (@d-k-music) into our family ashram.

Some of you may know him via his previous releases on Antinote, Jonny Nash's label 'Melody of Truth' or more recently his split EP via Second Circle.

He's also the melodic mystery man behind those jacking 45 ACP releases via dear brother Ron Morelli. 

Though here on this 38 minute cassette, aptly titled 'The Goddess is Dancing', D.K. delves back into his ancestral Vietnamese past & blesses us all with 6 originally composed tracks that pay homage to the mysterious shamanistic dance of 'Hau Dong'.

As explained by D.K. here....

"This tape is an imaginary interpretation of the music used in Vietnam’s ancestral/spiritual possession rituals called 'Hau Dong'. It’s a ceremony in 5 parts, whereby spirit mediums dance on each song to honor the mystical goddesses of Forest, Water and Heaven. Whilst dancing during these rituals, the Medium's appear to transform themselves into different characters....changing their personalities, as if various spirits have entered their bodies."
