Mamaw, my grandmother, was a storyteller, and she had a lot of stories! I lived with my grandmother in the 1980s and I benefited from her American dream, as reflected in this album.  This is an American story; it’s Mamaw’s story. 
 
My Little Child: This song came about as a prompt to write about a female hero, but the song also became an anthem for any parent having to send a child into the unknown, alone without them.  I thought of my great-grandmother on her deathbed, having to say goodbye to her children and instilling in them the will to stay strong and hopeful.
 
The Geese Story: This is one of my favorites of Mamaw's stories. While still in Kentucky, my great-grandfather had a reputation for making the best corn whiskey around. Corn mash is used to make whiskey and then discarded ... This is called, “spent mash.”  But sometimes old spent mash can get fermented and well geese can be mischievous in nature.  

Kentucky Rain: In 1910, Mamaw and all her siblings left the luscious green hills of Kentucky to be closer to their dying mother, who had moved to a hospital in the desert territory of Arizona.  

Daylight:  This song originated from another song prompt to write something with the title “Daylight;” and with my dad and son being big train fans, it quickly turned into a song about the train ride of Mamaw’s journey “to a strange new land.”
 
This Desert Place: I wrote this as a tribute to Mamaw’s pioneering spirit, as she bravely learned to adapt to a new place. “I give grace to this desert space I now call home.”  
 
Hook Your Chin To A Star!:  The title track of this album was inspired by an old “chin up” saying Mamaw used to tell me when I was disheartened. While I lived with her in the ‘80s, her home in Santa Barbara had a large backyard with a huge, shady avocado tree. That yard not only was the site of many family gatherings, but also provided the perfect meeting place for my first band, Wet Paint.  So this is why this song has an upbeat 80s feel to it. 

For America: In keeping with her tales celebrating our American pioneering roots, the album ends with a song I wrote with a friend. Note: If you listen carefully you will hear a mountain Dulcimer that was owned by Fess Parker aka Daniel Boone.
