The Bourgeois Four release their debut double AA side single through Speech Fewapy Records on Friday 14 November.
Celebrity Body Crisis / Facecrime were recorded at Muthers, Digbeth as well as guitarist Andy’s front bedroom using a couple of SM58s, an old-school Tascam 4-track cassette recorder and Garageband on a battered old Mac that doesn’t really work properly. Revel in the hiss, clunks clicks and sniffs. 
Celebrity Body Crisis tackles the banality of the media and news as entertainment over palm-muted riffs and rhythmic propulsion whereas Facecrime is an anxious-anthem, talking itself down from the ledge. 
The band originally formed in Birmingham and gigged regularly throughout the mid-noughties before unfortunately imploding after a typically blistering live show for promoters ThisisTmrw. In 2012 a charity gig offered them the chance to reform which planted several seeds of ‘what-ifs’; enough to encourage the band to capture their ‘b-punk’ sound for posterity, but also to start writing together again.
Facecrime, has been a firm live favourite since around 2005 with its giant choruses and agile bass groove and takes its title from George Orwell’s 1984: 
It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself -- anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offence. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called.
Celebrity Body Crisis, on the other hand is a completely new composition, taking its title from a headline on the front cover of a trashy magazine. Tristan Roe attempting to fathom the absurdities of tabloid and mainstream culture over a track that sees the band pick up exactly where they left off: edgy, energetic and melodic and passionate bursts of immediate pop.
The two songs are earmarked for inclusion on the band’s debut album which the band aim to release sometime in 2015. The band themselves are calling the as yet, untitled, mostly unrecorded album, a ‘lo-fi, b-punk masterpiece’ – whether the battered old Mac lasts the duration of recording remains to be seen.

THE BOURGEOIS FOUR release their debut album on Speech Fewapy Records on 8 April 2016.

A NINTH PATH features 10 explosive tunes recorded by the band themselves and mixed and mastered by Dom James (Calories, Sunset Cinema Club, Johnny Foreigner). 

The title is taken from a Hunter S. Thompson letter in response to a friend asking for advice; ‘a very human and very dangerous thing to do!’  In it, Thompson weighs up consciously and unconsciously striving for specific goals in life and the merits of simply enjoying floating with the tide, verses swimming towards a target.

Let’s assume that you think you have a choice of eight paths to follow (all pre-defined paths, of course). And let’s assume that you can’t see any real purpose in any of the eight. THEN — and here is the essence of all I’ve said — you MUST FIND A NINTH PATH.

The band formed after songwriting duo Tristan Roe (vox) and Andy Roberts (guitar) met at a fancy dress party at Hatchford Brook Youth Club sometime in the early 1990s. Andy, dressed as a butler, mistook Tristan’s Elvis costume as a Roy Orbison outfit. It took Andy some years to convince Tristan that it was meant as a compliment and the two began to repair damaged relations in the early 2000s by prolifically writing immediate and punchy punk/indie pop which would form the basis of The Bourgeois Four’s sound.
Influenced equally by The Smiths, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kraftwerk, Public Enemy, Radiohead, Soft Cell, The Strokes and countless others, the band have honed their powerful pop hooks and bold grooves to deliver their debut album. A NINTH PATH is both faithful to the band’s renowned live tightness, rawness and pace with songs such as Facecrime and Meat & Motorways while exploring deeper into their world with the likes of the unnerving 14:6 and the drifting melancholy of The Lighthouse.

Had the undeniably gifted Elliott Smith stuck to his Prozac subscription and recorded with Sufjan Stevens during the ‘Enjoy Your Rabbit’ album sessions, then the outcome would not be far removed from Folk-pop Experimental-mentalist Tom Peel’s latest effort - ‘TrippleClick It’.

Armed with a set of tools ranging from an old Power Mac to a 1940’s Reel to Reel tape deck, Tom Peel (already a prolific songwriter with a sizable back catalogue) set about recording ‘TrippleClick It’ in his bedroom in Witton, Birmingham in May 2010.

Having honed recording techniques during sessions for his last album ‘Logoff’, Tom continued with this process by altering and manipulating parts performed by other musicians (see distorted cello hook on ‘When I Die’). He attributes the signature sound of ‘TrippleClick It’ to his own unique recording methods “I like the limitations of recording in my bedroom. It allows the listener to hear where I’ve come from, and how cheap my equipment is.”

‘TrippleClick It’ opens the door for Tom Peel to approach some of society’s more complex subjects. Matters such as how to measure love and emotions in the 21st Century (‘94 Percent’) and coping with bereavement in a celebrity-obsessed culture (When I Die’) are both confronted, as well as dealing with our civilisation’s more pressing issues like obsolete technology (‘My Computer’s Outdated’). ‘TrippleClick It’ is light-heartedly reflective and veers away from convention whilst still maintaining it’s sure-fire pop credentials.

‘TrippleClick It’ is one of those few experiences in life when everything comes together to create a moment, a sentiment that Tom sums up perfectly. “At the end of one of the songs, you can actually hear an ice cream van going down my road. I like stuff like that”
