This mix was inspired by a vampire squid video Ari shared, and our last Anemone x Acid Camp party. The party featured a range of liquid to rocky DnB, dub, groovy house, live jazz, acid, and techno. I wanted to express the moods and movements of the vampire squid, and channel the joyful chaos of the party. Many thanks to friends, artists, and attendees who made that day possible! <3

Frank Bretschneider is a musician, composer and video artist in Berlin. His work is known for precise sound placement, complex, interwoven rhythm structures and its minimal, flowing approach. Bretschneider’s subtle and detailed music is echoed by his visuals: perfect translated realizations of the qualities found in music within visual phenomena.

Bretschneider was raised in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz since 1990), where his aesthetic developed as he listened to pirate radio and smuggled Beastie Boys tapes in the former East Germany. After studying fine arts and inspired by science fiction radio plays and films he began experimenting with tape machines, synthesizers, and modified guitars in 1984, as well as exploring the possibilities of exchange between visual art and music by various means such as film, video and computer graphics.

In 1986, after establishing his cassette label klangFarBe, Bretschneider founded AG Geige, a successful and influential East German underground band. In 1995, Bretschneider and fellow AG Geige member Olaf Bender founded the Rastermusic record label which eventually merged with Carsten Nicolai’s noton to form raster-noton (now raster media) in 1999. Since then Bretschneider has released more than 30 albums on various labels including Mille Plateaux, Faitiche, 12k and Line, and is performing at music/media festivals worldwide.

For this 4th episode of Puzzle, tobha has invited Alex Sourbis, a long time active member of the Brussels electronic music scene. For this episode, the puzzle is a bit more "classic", the first hour focussing on ambient tunes selected by tobha.

For the second hour, Alex started from a "chill D&B" playlist he’d been building over the past year. In his own words: "Although most tracks are around 170 BPM, I chose to focus on musical keys and harmonic progressions, shifting the emphasis away from groove. Unsurprisingly, the result is a strong sense of storytelling, with the narrative unfolding through changes in intensity and emotion depending on the harmonies. Alternating between 85 and 170 BPM also adds to the shifts in tone and colour. 
I recorded the mix in one take, moving into more intense IDM-style drums and classic jungle. The goal of that "chill D&B" playlist was to prove to some of my friends that intensity isn’t defined by speed or rhythmic drive. I think I managed to show that by focusing on gentler textures and melodic elements. Of course, I couldn’t resist going harder at times — but I always found my way back to calm and harmony."
