90s Hip Hop Mix

The track moves like a sermon sung in velvet. The tempo is smooth, steady, unhurried, like judgment that doesn’t need to rush because it always comes. The main male vocal carries it soft but firm, like a prophet speaking truth without strain. Behind him, the gospel choir rises like angels echoing God’s own voice, every harmony pressing the warning deeper.

It doesn’t sound like rage, it sounds like heaven leaning close. The message is clear: pride will take you high on the mountain, but without GOD by your side, that height is only a fall waiting. The funk is subtle, soulful, wrapping the words in groove, but it never distracts. It lets the warning breathe.

It’s less a song and more a visitation, God speaking with the angels at His back, reminding kings and mortals alike: crowns are dust, but truth endures.

Deconstructed, reconstructed, and broken-down like only the man who unofficially holds the title for most Chronic listens can.  A couple of interesting side notes about the album and me.  My first residency was located directly across the street from the studio where Chronic was recorded (I had no idea until years later).  There is a Popeye's Chicken located on the corner of Hollywood and Cahuenga where I would go to use the bathroom before my gigs, and where I would go to sober up before going home (personal highlight was seeing my childhood crush, Idalis eating there).  I would come to find out later via docs and interviews that Snoop, Daz, Kurupt and the gang would regularly eat at this very same Popeye's during the making of The Chronic.  Enough geeking out, enjoy the mix.
