In January of 1960, the Alvin Ailey Dance Company performed "Revelations", a piece that would become the signature choreographic work of the legendary dance company.  I have joined forces with Marquese Scott, the world's best street dancer, for this updated version of SinnerMan, in an attempt to bridge several generations of dance as well as pay homage to the groundbreaking work of Alvin Ailey.  The piece was commissioned by Preston Miller and United Artist Initiative to promote their upcoming short film, Enemy Within, featuring some of the best dancers in the world, scored entirely by Spekulation and Nate Omdal.

The Crossover Event includes a full-length instrumental album, a video companion piece, as well as 10 variant covers (one for each song). At its heart, The Crossover Event is a concept album, a score to a movie that doesn't quite exist yet, playing with tropes and themes from my favorite comic books. I went all-out with this one, and I hope you have a chance to take the ride and share it with your friends.

For an instrumental album without any words, I have a surprising amount to say about how this record came together, so bear with me. A few months ago I put out a call on my personal facebook page looking for instrumentalists to collaborate on a low-key art project, the kind of thing we could do over the internet that wouldn't take a whole lot of face-to-face time since I have a new baby at home so time and money is limited. The response was great, and by the end of the day I had a long list of seriously talented performers who wanted to give it a shot.

I sent each of them the same folder with 10 basic outlines for songs, and asked them to record whatever they felt inspired to play, on whichever songs they wanted. The files I got back ranged from long solos to short catchy riffs recorded on a bunch of different instruments, all recorded at the instrumentalists' home studios. From there I chopped up, sampled, arranged, and repurposed the audio, eventually creating these new songs. Virtually nothing on the album is used exactly as it was recorded, but everything that was recorded was used in some way, shape, or form.

As for the "concept album" part of the process, I was really determined to make something more than just a mixtape of random beats. I wanted it to have an intentional sound and narrative that I could look to for guidance when arranging and composing. I'm a comic nerd and have always wanted to tell a story in that world and this seemed like a fun and unlikely way to make it happen, so I decided to shape the music as if it was a score to a comic book movie in my head. Once the music was done, I felt like I still wanted to play in that world a little more, so I put together the 10 variant covers and the 35-minute video which loosely align with the narrative in my head and the kinds of images I was seeing as I was composing the music. 

All that is to say that this is the nerdiest goddamned project I've ever put together, and I couldn't be happier with it. Making music without expectations or deadlines, and making art about my favorite stuff, is really how it should be... particularly when I get to work with such amazing instrumentalists without even having to leave the house. The dream, achieved.
