Driven by inspirations such as Prince, Laurie Anderson, Gilberto Gil and Todd Rundgren, Spencer Owen (b. Los Angeles, r. Oakland) is a musical polymath, interpreting (through his compositions, recorded works and performances) the aesthetics and worldviews he is drawn to ('60s-'90s America, Europe, Brazil, Japan, Congo, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, with a particular focus on mid-'70s through entire '80s) with careful, passionate abandon. Unafraid of eclecticism both sonic and stylistic, he supplements his gift for melody and arrangement with restless aesthetic creativity in action. Backed by a crack team of unbelievably tasteful, soft-spoken musicians known as the Spencer Owen Timeshare, his live shows are not, in any respect, to be missed.

The live foundation of "Letter Dance" was recorded in one 40-minute take, with one microphone, at the Crystal Palace in Santa Cruz, CA on February 10, 2009. It is presented here, but for an early fadeout, uncut. Thanks to these (present and past) members of James Rabbit for their valiant participation.

The overdubbed portion of "Letter Dance" was recorded, and the resulting product mixed, on Courtland Ave. in Oakland, CA between February 11 and March 30, 2009.

The finished piece was mastered, vitally, by John Acquadro between March 31 and April 1, 2009.

Former labelmate of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti (the now-defunct Ballbearings Pinatas), Owen is a pop music polymath and one-man band, with inspirations such as Prince and Laurie Anderson and influences ranging from Gilberto Gil to Todd Rundgren.
