Musician, producer and environmental scientist Nourey announces the ‘Meant To Be EP’ and releases new single, ‘For Ellie’.

Egyptian-born, Boston-based musician Nourey is a rising star on the label. First picking up the guitar at ten years old, Nourey turned to music production; releasing on Elliptical Sun Recordings and AVA. Her unique blend of trance, house and jazz caught the ear of Above & Beyond, who played her debut single 'Skylar' on Group Therapy Radio in 2019. She soon crossed over to Anjunabeats, remixing Gabriel & Dresden and releasing 'In Motion' (with OLAN), 'All Night' (with ZOYA) and ‘Meant To Be’ (with FOSTER).

The second single from her upcoming debut EP, ‘For Ellie’ is dedicated to Zanziman Ellie, a 21-year-old Rwandan man with microcephaly, whose story went viral in late 2020. Nourey will be donating a portion of her royalties for this release to the Foundation for Children with Microcephaly and Fraternity Without Borders.

“I was deeply touched when I read about Zanziman Ellie’s story, and to learn he was forced to move out of his town for being different. Even more, when I learned more about the condition he has, microcephaly. He’s always smiled at everyone who has bullied him for looking different, so this track was written as a smile back at this kind soul" - Nourey

Alongside her music career, Nourey is also a postdoctoral research fellow and manager of the Climate Change and Cities Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She works closely with AnjunaHQ on sustainability initiatives, and has multiple academic awards and honours for her research.

Nourey is set for a breakthrough year on Anjunabeats, with more original music arriving soon on the label and performances lined up at Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy Weekender festivals at The Gorge and Dockyards London. The four-track ‘Meant To Be EP’ arrives August 8 on Anjunabeats.

Since launching in early 2016, the Explorations series returns for its fourth outing. Having previously welcomed artists such as Theo Kottis, Tontario, Modd and Luttrell to the label, ‘Anjunadeep Explorations 04’ introduces more new faces to the family.

Previously one-half of production duo Journeyman, Dom Furlonge makes his debut outing under his new Antic alias with EP opener ‘And I Pray’. Dom showcases his own vocals and distinctive production flair on this quirky club cut.

Our second track brings together the Bath-based duo Kotu and Munich’s Sam Goku on ‘Ascension’, blending a subtle rolling bassline with soaring strings and sparse piano to wonderful effect. A much sought after ID from recent Anjunadeep Editions from James Grant and Dom Donnelly.

Next up is emerging German talent Ben Böhmer with ‘Flug & Fall’. Ben fuses organic elements, vocal chanting and warm melodic grooves in this uplifting number.

Closing the EP, Melbourne’s GMJ and Matter debut with throwback progressive gem ‘Earthless’.

The Issue

The stories behind the EP:

Will I Ever Find Love - I wrote this record after I developed quite strong feelings for someone, but the person did not have the same feelings back for me. I’m usually a very happy person, but this experience put me in quite a dark place at the time, which is when I wrote this track. Having never been in a serious relationship with anyone, this track represents the feeling of wondering if you will ever find the one.

Downpour - This record was written in October of 2016 soon after my graduation from Duke University when I was living with family east of San Francisco (in a town called Danville). To clear my mind, I would take walks on a mountain called Mt. Diablo, conveniently about 5-10 minutes away. I get far more inspired from foggy/rainy weather than when it is sunny, so I usually went on long hikes when a rainstorm would be forecasted. One morning I was hiking on the mountain, there was a massive rainstorm, and the fog and the clouds provided some gorgeous views. Later that afternoon, I started “Downpour” based on this experience.

Tassajara - This record was actually written a day or two after Downpour in October of 2016, still with the initial inspiration of fog and rain from my mountain hiking. At the time, I was writing music some 12-16 hours a day, with a single break in the middle of the day for lunch. The main road I would take to get lunch was called “Camino Tassajara.” One day on my way back from lunch, I was testing what is now “Tassajara” on my car’s sound system, when I glanced at a street sign, and the name fit perfectly.
