Meet JODA: a fresh musical pairing with shared DNA. 

Jono Grant and Darren Tate have history. Both together and apart, they have been there, done that and bought the vintage synth gear to celebrate.

Grant is one-third of Above & Beyond who, over the course of a two-decade career, have established themselves as one of the biggest electronic groups in the world. Eight studio albums (including one as vocal trance group OceanLab and two acoustic reworks), 17 compilation albums, a film score and nearing 100 singles speak to an output as varied as it is prodigious. Their label Anjunabeats is home to a bustling community of artists with over twenty years of catalogue.

As a classically trained musician, songwriter, producer and hitmaker, Tate is an OG Top of the Pops-botherer. In the early Noughties, at the outset of his career, he appeared on the show three times, once with Angelic, his collaboration with Judge Jules and the latter’s wife, performing classic trance banger It’s My Turn, then twice under the name Jurgen Vries. The following years saw more musical adventures, more Top 40 UK hits (12 in total) and more pseudonyms, including the trance-facing DT8 Project.

In 2003, the pair managed to sync their schedules to work on a couple of tracks, 'Let The Light Shine In' and 'Nocturnal Creatures'. Clearly, there was chemistry here. But as the pair’s respective careers subsequently took them off round the world in opposite directions, reconnecting other than fleetingly was never easy.

Then in 2019 Tate returned to his trance roots and signed to Anjunabeats for his DT8 Project releases. Around the same time, Above & Beyond received an offer to score an environmental documentary, 'The Last Glaciers'.

“I'm musical, but I've never done a score before, which would be quite an undertaking. And I knew Darren was massively experienced at doing that, and I've always admired what he does in his film work. So my first thought was: why don't we do it with Darren?” 

Jono and Darren got stuck into composing together, and it became a dream project all round ­– not least because it sparked further ideas. So, JODA was born. Working in Tate’s studio in suburban north London, and A&B’s south London HQ, the pair were in a creative bubble during the early days of the pandemic. And the partnership proved fruitful.

It was as if this pair of young-minded veterans were finding themselves all over again. Aptly enough, that fed into 'We Find Ourselves', featuring Grant's own vocals.

“Darren had the idea of using the ARP Odyssey for the bass sound,” explains Grant, “and it sounds very retro. We were listening to stuff like the Drive soundtrack by Kavinsky. So the tempo of the track actually comes from that style of music. We wouldn't have ended up at 110 BPM if it wasn't for listening to that kind of music."

The stories behind the EP:

Will I Ever Find Love - I wrote this record after I developed quite strong feelings for someone, but the person did not have the same feelings back for me. I’m usually a very happy person, but this experience put me in quite a dark place at the time, which is when I wrote this track. Having never been in a serious relationship with anyone, this track represents the feeling of wondering if you will ever find the one.

Downpour - This record was written in October of 2016 soon after my graduation from Duke University when I was living with family east of San Francisco (in a town called Danville). To clear my mind, I would take walks on a mountain called Mt. Diablo, conveniently about 5-10 minutes away. I get far more inspired from foggy/rainy weather than when it is sunny, so I usually went on long hikes when a rainstorm would be forecasted. One morning I was hiking on the mountain, there was a massive rainstorm, and the fog and the clouds provided some gorgeous views. Later that afternoon, I started “Downpour” based on this experience.

Tassajara - This record was actually written a day or two after Downpour in October of 2016, still with the initial inspiration of fog and rain from my mountain hiking. At the time, I was writing music some 12-16 hours a day, with a single break in the middle of the day for lunch. The main road I would take to get lunch was called “Camino Tassajara.” One day on my way back from lunch, I was testing what is now “Tassajara” on my car’s sound system, when I glanced at a street sign, and the name fit perfectly.

This song is one of the older tracks on the album; I wrote it in 2017, shortly after my first homecoming at Duke. After a long day of producing, I got into bed at about 3am, but there was some voice that told me to start yet another project in the studio. Reconnecting with so many college friends clearly left a creative afterglow, because I wrote 95% of “Arps n Crafts” in the following hour. Then I went back to sleep. The track was initially an experiment I never intended to release, but it fit quite well on the album.

I debuted this record at my four-hour, open-to-close set at Rumor in Philadelphia.

Veteran producer, DJ and composer Darren Tate presents ‘Where We Go From Here pt. 2’, his latest release under the DT8 Project alias. 

After exploring retro-inspired sounds on the first ‘Where We Go From Here’ EP (released on Anjunabeats in November 2020), this new, three-track release sees Darren returning to contemporary progressive and breakbeat.

A classically trained musician, Darren has been composing club music since the early 00’s. He’s the founder of Mondo Records, and has collaborated with Boy George and Jono Grant from Above & Beyond. Discerning clubbers of a certain age will undoubtedly have fond memories of tracks like ‘It’s My Turn’ (as Angelic) and ‘The Theme’ (as Jurgen Vries). Darren has soundtracked over 15 feature films.

“After our more synthwave-inspired first EP, this second outing is a bit more of a return to roots for us. The first single ‘Crystallize’ could be described as an ambient-progress-house cut in the style of The Orb and Brian Eno. It features vocals by Danielle Rowe (Poloroid) who previously sang on ‘Carry On’. Dan also sings on the second track on the EP, the break-infused ‘See It Through’, which also features some trademark DT8 orchestration.

The final track “Who Knows For How Long” features vocals by David Wright, the lead singer of Headway. The band previously recorded this track on their album and we decided to do a new mix; one that captures the original indie vibe and then incorporates it with some classic DT8-style progressive elements.” - Darren Tate

Argentinian producer Tomas Heredia presents the ‘Before The Ashes EP’.

A rising star of the South American electronic music scene, the ‘Before The Ashes EP’ is Tomas’ second solo release on the label. His label debut ‘Gave U My Love’ was released in November 2020, and was supported by Above & Beyond, Andrew Rayel, Ruben de Ronde and Ørjan Nilsen. 

Tomas regularly supports Above & Beyond when they tour Argentina, most recently at Mar Del Plata in 2019. Long-term fans may recognise Tomas from his ‘At Sunrise’ remix of Above & Beyond and Richard Bedford’s ‘On My Way To Heaven’, released in 2012.

Alongside a pair of new productions from Tomas, the ‘Before The Ashes EP’ also contains a new remix of ‘Gave U My Love’, from veteran producer Mike Saint-Jules.
