In 1978, I was a student at Emerson College, and a news intern at WBCN in Boston. The 2am to 6am slot on WBCN was occupied by Detroit radio legend Jerry Goodwin. Goodwin was known for doing weird "bits" during his "graveyard shift" show, that would make listeners wonder whether they were awake or dreaming. With my own background in theater, music, and amateur recording, plus a love of radio comedy like the Firesign Theatre, the Credibility Gap, and The National Lampoon, I knew I had to get in on that, and the rest is history. Even if no one really knew about it besides a few listeners in those weird hours.

This was one of the first "Sunday Sometimes Specials" I co-wrote and produced with Jerry from that era. Some of it was written by others, including Charles Bukowski, the comic artist Terry Beatty, Billy West, my brother, Mike Kates, as well as a couple of listeners who would send us written skits along with tape (on both reels and cassettes) of their own ideas that we'd knit into the finished show. The pre-recorded phone calls in this episode were sent by a listener who insisted it was him and his friends goofing around, but they sound very real to me, listening now. I think he would anonymously call strangers and record it via 3-way calling. Though this predates cel phones by some years. "Phony phone calls" and "obscene phone calls" were a topic of much discussion in those days, and that's reflected in this "special".

WARNING: Some of the humor is "out of date" and some of it may have been considered in as bad taste then as it does now. However, no animals or humans were harmed in the making of this program, and it passed FCC muster. if Jerry and I offend anyone with any of this content, we hope everyone is offended equally, but not permanently, and please remember this is what made people laugh and wonder if their ears were hallucinating in 1980 in Boston, Massachusetts.
