This week on FMB Mixtape Series, we’re happy to welcome the vinyl-only DJ & music producer, Tarkno, hailing from Australia. As always, we first caught up to find out more about the mix & what he’s been up to lately…

I am currently getting ready to head back on tour in Europe and play some exciting events. This means a lot of packing, organizing and planning has been taking place.

The mix was actually recorded back in my home studio, in Melbourne, Australia during my holiday break. This gave me access to my entire record collection, so I made sure to select some hidden gems that hadn’t made their way into my bag yet. 

The idea for this mix was to play strictly old school tools from my personal collection. All of the records resonate deeply with me, embodying the true sound of underground techno. While the mix has a consistent theme I made sure to include a few staple tracks that I have enjoyed playing out recently.

To celebrate the 240th Local Selection mix, Cork-native, NYC-based selector STE-VÍ, once half of the Hanley Brothers, takes us on a journey through the golden age of techno. Mixed entirely on vinyl, the young selector glides through a collection of tribal-kissed 90s classics featuring cuts from Marco Bailey, DJ Shufflemaster, Joris Voorn, Hardcell, and others.

New York-based techno artist STE-VÍ creates a unique blend of driving techno and groove.
The energetic DJ is influenced by late 90s/early 2000s techno, but he also includes recent cuts while keeping his gaze fixed on the record shelves. His style incorporates a fast-paced blend of loops, percussion, and rhythm to create an innovative sound that is reminiscent of the past. Recent headline shows in Boston and Toronto, combined with his breakneck style of vinyl mixing have seen him become a highly sought-after selector.

The Cork native polished his chops by playing with his brother at underground showcases under the name The Hanley Brothers. The duo performed at clubs and festivals around Ireland, and they were recognised for their harsh approach on techno. He currently lives in the United States, where he DJs at revered New York clubs and performs with industry giants.

STE-VÍ’s contribution to the Local Selection is a relentless assault of thumping drums and gritty basslines, cutting through the mix with a persistent closed-fist approach. His mixes have a raw, unabashed intensity that is synonymous with 90s and 2000s shuffling techno and the art of mixing it well – fast, choppy, and unforgiving. The hour mix is as smooth and slick as it is uncompromisingly ferocious, seamlessly blending teeth-grinding stompers with samba-soaked tribal grooves. This is exactly what a vintage techno mix should be.

With surprisingly versatile mixing, genre-bending track selection and fast navigated transitions between basic human emotions, the objective of the Hungarian rooted and Dortmund based dj / producer ‘Robin Tasi’ is to let you forget your daily worries. Born and bred in Melbourne Australia, SPEZ is claiming his spot in the techno space, humbly paving his path as DJ, Producer and Warg Records owner. Through a journey of the unknown, Marko Sperac takes audiences on a meteoric ascension with his loopy, rolling and truly hypnotic hues, doing it with dynamism.

On the show circuit, SPEZ was invited to play at the Sub Club in Glasgow for Return to Mono, along with SHDW & Obscure Shape’s record label night From Another Mind at Fridas Pier in Germany, opening up the wondrous yet bold world of European techno.
