90s Techno Redux - Mix 004

A new project is slowly emerging, 
sounds from another dimension, original productions to follow. These sessions are an exploration of my vinyl and digital library, I have amassed a ridiculous collection right across the spectrum of techno so chronicling my digging through this was appealing  -  recorded live on Technics  1200's and XDJ's - imperfections and all.

SPHERE SESSIONS I

DJ firebrand Takaaki Itoh has come a long way since his early days of Detroit-influenced techno and parties in northern Japan. Without compromising anything in the way of quality his appeal has grown exponentially. Like a musical surgeon, his approach relies less on sweeping gestures and more on small millimetric cuts and tweaks that slowly ramp up the mood and leave the listener with sound that is at turns growling, mystical and amorphous. Bassiani Podcast 105 is a monolithic, trance-inducing opus from the land of the rising sun.

MindTrip Podcast 068 - Leiras

As a region, Southeast Asia plays host to a colourful electronic music scene, rich with diverse sounds, landscapes and audiences. In recent years, cross-pollination and collaboration have become important facets of this scene, with inspiration and energy transmitting regularly between cities and crews. Central to many of these exchanges has been Bangkok-based DJ, producer and label-head @sunjuhargun, whose distinctive blend of vibrant, sophisticated psychedelia and the natural sounds of his surroundings have seen him grace stages in clubs, caves, forests, warehouses and castles across Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and onwards into Europe. 

His current project, @siamesetwinsrecords, also finds a solid foundation in pan-Asian connections. A platform to explore old-world chants and ceremonial percussion, the label hosts many of Sunju's own works, including Bollywood-inspired acid made as Mogambo and wildly meditative Thai temple drone music as Khun Fluff. 

Sunju’s Patterns of Perception 99 is a recording from a recent visit to Japan - more specifically from his appearance at a Transcendence party at Circus in Tokyo. 
Humming with psychedelic movement, this set finds Sunju channelling the intimacy of the venue to great effect, intuitively balancing nostalgic groove, sweaty exotica and cutting-edge trippiness. As we descend further into the mix, it's impossible to not feel a tightening of focus as spiralling energies shimmer and release. 

"Anything could happen, everything was possible, all is connected" 
- Sunju's perfectly apt before/during/after summation.

Mike Parker joins the podcast this week! The aesthetic or theme behind Mike’s music is easily of the most recognizable in techno today. The hypnotic and minimalist approach to his music often results in tracks featuring nothing more than a synth and a kick drum.

In this episode, Dustin goes in-depth with Mike about the reasoning and the process behind this approach. The two recount Mike’s resurgence of sorts about 5-6 years ago. They also dig into Mike’s music history, his career as a college professor, the recent debut of his live set, and what’s making Mike tick as a DJ today. He released his Lustrations LP in 2014 on Prologue along with a slew of great EPs on various labels since then. January saw the release of a remix comissioned by Spectral Records for MATRiXXMAN’s debut album, Homesick.

We caught up for the occasion and picked their brain on experiencing these last couple of months, what’s been keeping them busy, and things to come, including an upcoming field recordings project.
