I feel like sitting in one of the local combi taxies musing over the dry bush-land flying past, some homesteads and villages here and there, and Baobab Trees towering over the bush… and I’m hearing the echo of the women telling about their lives, Tonga culture, the history of displacement, basket making and fishing… and including echo from the Tonga on the other side of Kariba Lake… it’s a journey from Binga to Bulawayo even (I wish that long painful journey was be as beautiful as your music carrying along a listener from voice to voice, and from story to story…!)

With: the musician arts administrator Penny Yon, student Linda Mudimba; Barbara Mudimba, a basket weaver and Viola Mwembe at Binga Craft Centre (translating Barbara); the teacher, Florence Munsaka at Damba Primary School; Janet Mwindii and Luyando Muyalali in front of artifacts at BaTonga Museum in Binga; Abbigal Muleya and Rosemary Cumanzala from the women’s organization ZUBO Trust in Binga; artist and researcher, Esnart Mweemba, who belongs to the Zambian Tonga; Christine Hankwebe (Basilwizi Trust) singing a Weddingsong together with her neighbours, Ester and Mtenda (Zambian Tonga in Bulawayo); and Bulawayo painter, Nonhlanhla Mathe, talking on the inspiration of Tonga Culture through her grandmother.

The follow-up to Oliver Yorke’s beautifully crafted EP on the label (of which we hosted the brilliant Heron Flow-collab ‘Camino’), Cloud Lord breaks new, juxtaposed ground on 3 standout tracks, all of which offer something different, thriving in their individual and grouped uniqueness. Honestly, we never swear in these write-ups (never really any need to) but 'Heady One’ & ‘Neek’ are two of the most fucking barbaric tunes we’ve heard so far in 2021 - they flow and scope with malicious intent, yet never lose that tasteful CNVX rhythm and familial bounce - fully earning their place and keep here. We’ve had the pleasure of hosting lead cut ‘Teeth Wisdom’, and as someone who’s just had two wisdom teeth out in November, I have to say this is a real source of equilibrium for me! Combining the heaving grit and devastating wonk of those aforementioned cleavers, the title cut combines downtempo swing with Cloud Lord’s commitment to forceful, driving humdingers, and it works out absolutely perfectly.
