Revolution

Sometimes it helps me to remember that the earth is very old and has experienced a lot of death. Sometimes it helps me to remember that all this is necessary for the continued evolution of life. From Wikipedia: The oxygen catastrophe was the point (around 2.3 billion years ago) when cyanobacteria (bluegreen algae) became saturated and could not capture all of the oxygen that was produced by cyanobacterial photosynthesis. After this, the excess free oxygen started to accumulate in the atmosphere. Free oxygen is toxic to obligate anaerobic organisms, and the rising concentrations may have wiped out most of the Earth's anaerobic inhabitants at the time. Eventually however, aerobic organisms began to evolve, consuming oxygen and bringing about an equilibrium in its availability. Free oxygen has been an important constituent of the atmosphere ever since.
