In this episode we explore contemporary challenges to rationalism in an age of data, asking what the unique effects of technological mediation are on the culture of spirituality, by inviting artist and founding member of Black Obsidian Sound System Evan Ifekoya for a discussion, along with a mix from multifaceted art platform Most Dismal Swamp.

Jared talks with Evan on topics spanning astrology and digital mediation, ritual practices, and music’s relation to mysticism, as explored in exhibitions such 'Ritual without Belief' at London’s Gasworks, and their work for the major group show 'Transformer: a Rebirth of Wonder' exhibition at London’s 180 The Strand in 2019.

This is followed by 'Night Science (Deep Tissue mix)' by Most Dismal Swamp, a London based interdisciplinary art project and curatorial platform producing exhibitions, online events and music releases. We invited Most Dismal Swamp to contribute a mix on the theme of mysticism and technology, being interested in the way the platform speculates on weirding and reality in our online age.

++ TINNITVS - A 5-YEAR ANNIVERSARY COMPILATION ++

In 2015, Club Late Music was created as an open-source music label, with the ambition to explore the production and diffusion of artistic contents by connecting artists worldwide into a network based on collaboration, sharing and mutual aid. It was quickly followed by the creation of the Global URL Nation in 2017 : a still growing community of artists, designers and enthusiasts willing to crystallize this idea into a tangible reality.

Five years later, after more than a dozen projects - from EPs and compilations to audiovisual pieces and installations, as well as many radio shows, live acts and club events - we are still more than convinced that collective action, togetherness and genuine openness are much needed guides to navigate our troubled times.

We are happy to celebrate this double anniversary with TINNITVS, a 12-track compilation made by members and friends of the Global URL Nation. With 24 artists from more than a dozen countries, it acts as a statement of our current mindset by presenting only collaborative tracks made by two or more persons. An embodiment of playful exploration and muti-faceted creation, covering a broad range of sounds and styles, from the lowest roars to the sparkliest ringing vocals.

As a reverse present to our supporters, as well as a way to explore further what open-source could mean in contemporary music production, the stems of each track are made available for anyone to use as they please when downloading the compilation. We hope this initiative will give birth to inspiring reworks and remixes, expanding the scope of the original tracks into new beings in perpetual evolution. We invite any contributions, from GUN members and beyond, to be sent to us in order to be gathered under a common project that will take shape in the coming months with the same mindset.

We are overwhelmingly thankful to anyone who has joined and participated in the adventure, as well as to everyone who has shown support in any way possible - from those who listened to our music to those who played it, from those who shared our content to those who involved us in their activities. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the continuous inspiration.

We still have a lot to learn and to improve, and we hope that this anniversary only marks a foundation to build upon. A basis that will allow us to keep further exploring sonic realms and visual wonders, as well as collective organization and collaborative processes.

Let’s hope we can celebrate and dance together soon.

After launching his new label katharsis with a 30 track compilation trilogy featuring a big range of artists from all across the globe, jjjacob caries on with his own music by releasing the 6-track EP Mythos under his alternative moniker Basura on the label. The EP will be released on September 12th with premieres coming out on AQNB, Soul Feeder and Ma3azef the previous weeks.

With katharsis, jjjacob has set out to explore how we as humans find emotional cleansing in music, which was showcased thoroughly on the compilation trilogy by thematizing the affective value of the basic elements: The Flow of Water, The Burn of Fire and The Breath of Air. The fourth element of earth seems to be missing, but this is exactly what Mythos tries to deal with by submerging in the ancient mythologies of humans on earth.

On Mythos, Basura sends us on a range of spiritual journeys through the archaic stories of past civilizations. With heavy use of granular synthesis, odd time signatures and clusters of obscure samples, the EP takes us through landscapes of death, scriptures of mysticism and sagas of our souls. The grandiose melodies of jjjacob are to be found on some of the tracks, but as Basura he covers them in strange textures and murky drums. Dive into Basuras musical tales of sorcerous seeresses, prehistoric rituals and underworldly atmospheres.

Peramen! A Compilation for Belarus

“Change! Our hearts demand it. Change! Our eyes demand it”, sings Kino’s Viktor Tsoi in “Peremen”. This song may now be heard on the streets of not just Minsk and Grodno, but also Babruysk, Brest, Gomel, Mogilev, Pinsk, Vitebsk and what – at least to a foreign onlooker – looks like countless Belarussian cities and towns engulfed in protest. Following years of Alexander Lukashenko’s rule, another rigged election, omnipresent violence perpetrated by the state apparatus, censorship and draconian laws, the people have taken to the streets en masse. This is not the first time the Belarusians are out to protest, but the scale of these disturbances is unprecedented. Also unprecedented is the fact the rallies are led by women, who head the peaceful marches that have spread onto the streets of Belarus. Workers, miners, teachers, employees of the media and the Minsk underground as well as artists from the Belarusian State Philharmonic have all joined the protests. All proceeds from Peramen! A Compilation for Belarus will go to #BY_help, a grassroots initiative offering aid to victims of repression, established on the wave of arrests that shook Belarus in March 2017. The funds will be used to pay fines, unlawful fees imposed for being held in detention, medical costs and lawyers.

The idea for the compilation was developed by Elena Sizova, Minsk-based DJ and producer. Peramen! A Compilation for Belarus was prepared with the help of the Radio Kapitał collective.
