Listen to 'Shifting Skies', the first track off Wire Tontes ep, a collaboration in duet between David Parker on contrabass and Stefan Christoff on piano. 

This recording is inspired by the struggle against the current expansion of the prison industrial complex under the Conservative government in Canada. 

Although tones on their own can’t bring down prison walls, or rip down barbed wire, hopefully this recording can speak to the passion that drives prison abolitionists, the human spirit driving thousands of people fighting to undercut regressive, expansionist prison policies under the Conservatives.

Listen to Elephantine, the opening track of Flying Street الشارع الطيّار an album by Sam Shalabi (oud) + Stefan Christoff (piano), released in Nov. 2014 by Howl arts collective. 

Sam Shalabi wrote in The Wire magazine about this track :

"Our duo began as a friendship that grew out of long conversations about music, social justice and politics and then evolved naturally into this musical dialogue. The core of our approach is to continue that conversation and hear how these two mother instruments (maybe the two most weighted down by their own respective traditions and tropes) might speak directly and simply to each other through improvisation. This piece is named after a Nubian Island in Aswan, in Upper Egypt and is inspired by it and music from the region."

guitar / organ recording done at my apartment in parc extension in Montréal, recorded on the first day that seemed like a 2015 spring is possible. recorded lo-fi on a telephone. with a percussive loop on a hammond organ from the 60s and electric guitar through a little dusty amp. 

the notes are saying essentially that trying to believe is worth the effort, that trying to fight is worth the effort, or something like that, keeping things in perspective, re: global imperialist injustices taking place (Gaza) v.s. life in Montréal and our responsibility to act in solidarity always, while trying to find the inner strength to do so. -- Stefan.
