After ten years in the instrumental ensemble Balmorhea, Rob Lowe is releasing his first R&B-inflected solo LP, Slow Time, under the moniker RG Lowe. The record, while incorporating elements from pop and choral music, largely looks back on the warmth and spiritual ecstasy of early R&B through the disjunctive lens of contemporary life.  Lowe, who plays keys, guitar, and provides the vocals on Slow Time, wrote and arranged about forty songs from 2014 to 2015 at his studio in Austin, TX, where he resides. He then headed to Philadelphia to record most of the album with producer Jeff Ziegler, whose raw and energetic production work on albums by Kurt Vile and The War on Drugs had inspired him.  Though his wordless vocals appeared occasionally on Balmorhea’s albums, on Slow Time we hear the impressive range and malleability of his voice as he glides from hymnal backing harmonies, to melismatic bridges, to punchy choruses and pained screeches that stretch his voice to its unbelievable limits.

Ahhh what a time to be alive, what a time to pack up your shit and get the fuck out of the place you once called home, a place you once called the Spice Palace. My star sign reading didn’t say much about it, so I cheated and read the next month over which read “you’ll probably be sleeping on your sisters couch for the next week. While you’re in loungeroom limbo you might as well make a mix tape for all the other people packing their own proverbial shit.” I kiss the crystals next to me three times, give my thanks to the moon and get started.

Leaving home has a kinda bittersweet feeling that’s hard to pinpoint. All the cool memories you have of the house start feeling like good episodes of a 90s sitcom that is your life and you think about how sad/heartwarming the "moving out" episode would be. “Would this be the season finale?” you ask yourself over and again, maybe they should just axe the fucking show altogether. 

At some point you have packed your last box and chucked what’s left of your life in your mum’s car. You hope it all gets lost, or the car gets lit on fire in some sort of Durden-esque masochistic fit of rage (not with mum in it of course) because all your clothes are gross and your art doesn’t mean shit when they aren’t blue-tacked to your wall, perfectly separated in some sort of roundabout zen “randomly” placed way. You say goodbye to your room-mates as the umbilical chord gets ripped off and you get pushed out into the non-spicey real world to fend for yourself. It’s at this point you should check yourself and try figure out what’s it all about…....and once you do let me know, cuz I got no fuckin clue. But maybe ill find it at my new place.  :)
