This is a mix I made for Oligopolist records. These are songs and artists that have directly influenced the music I make as drowse. There are so many other sounds I love that haven’t yet played a role in the formation of my music, and so many who have that I wasn’t able to fit in this mix (Can, The Haxan Cloak, Red House Painters, Portishead, Bedhead etc…). I hope you get as much out of these songs as I do.

This is volume one of Cosmographia (International Cassette Culture), a selection of tracks originally released on cassette in the late 80s plus some never published ones by three European acts: Idee du Femelle (Barcelona, Spain), Genetic Factor (Amsterdam, Holland) and Collectionism (Frankfurt, Germany).

Their common link is the “non-musician” concept as originally stated by Brian Eno, also to be found in Kraftwerk, Can, Cluster and some modern classical composers like Ligeti or Cage. All three were deeply involved in the live scene and the self-distribution ethics of their time. All of them innovated in aesthetics as well as music itself and that showed in their live performances, working with artists from other fields to create a sound-and-vision experience recaptured here on vinyl.

Idee du Femelle, starting in 1984, managed to record 9 cassettes, most of them self-produced and distributed by mail. Toni Parera, the man behind Idee du Femelle, is a versatile musician who wrote music in several electronic styles, such as New Age, experimental, Berlin school and ambient.

Genetic Factor, an impersonation of Richard Zeilstra, started out in 1977, mainly out of love for an improbable merge of Industrial and experimental pop. His heart was more into making music than marketing it, although he can be heard on several compilations such as the relatively well-known 'Radionome' and 'Colonial Vipers', both from 1982. He worked with a vast array of artists beyond music.

Collectionism were brothers Peter and Tomas Fey and Peter Prochir. Founded in 1984, they are digging in a quarry of pop culture, searching for something they can quote. They prove that you can create music with natural sounds and a synthesizer with a feeling in it. Athmospheric soundscapes, handmade and synthetic, are interrupted by vocal effects or harsh, raw sounds. With their live shows, Collectionism created an optical and acoustic feast for eyes and ears.

Soon after the break with Deadpan Interference back in 2016, Martin Funder, Max Cosnier and Sofie Westh already knew that they weren't done with developing their music. During the years 2017-18 new sounds grew out from their collaboration and is now ready to be shown to the world. 

It's near impossible to put a specific genre on the band's characteristic sound, but the heavy, experimental approach to songwriting and rhythm - mixed with a great love of explosive pop-music - isn't to be mistaken. 
With the new sounds came new songs and an urge to play around with a brand new set up. 

Two members have been added to the Deadpan stable who is now running a pack of five. The new people added is the lead singer Arsene Survie (Syringe) and guitarist and synth player Christian Skibdal (ex-The Wands) 

Deadpan are ready to present themselves with their new EP "Fool Moon" released on December 7th. 
The album has been produced by Oliver Volz (Shiny Darkly) and is being released on Paris based record label Third Coming Records. 

First single from the EP and the titel track Fool Moon is to be released October 18th and will be accompanied by a video made by director Frederik Valentin

We present for you a live set recorded on September 19th at Hypnotic Spa by the Swedish artist Hans Berg, who we were fortunate to be able to invite while he was in town for Sustain-Release. As co-founder of the label UFO Station Recordings with Johanna Knutsson, Hans typically produces and releases spiraling techno with a hint of ethereal. For this occasion he brought a table of gear and performed a touching, massaging soundscape for the Spa. Was a treat to host and meet him and we hope you all enjoy the music.

Against Fascism Trax. 

Many small actions combined can have great power, and it is always better to try to do something than to do nothing.  I have long believed this.  It breaks my heart that AF Trax must exist, but sitting back and doing nothing is an option I simply cannot countenance.

Our current global political climate gives grave cause for concern, because when the world tips to the right, those within marginalised communities feel repressive outcomes directly & immediately.  It is easy to think “it surely isn’t so bad”?, but those people precarious in their life circumstances, marginalised in our communities and displaced across the borders of the world are already suffering the consequences - often violently - of this shift in ideology.

We live in an era where talking is endless, but where actions are harder to find.  If AF Trax reaches just one person to make them change their mind over being a supporter of the far right, motivates somebody to work against fascist thinking, informs someone or raises funds - then I will view it as having been a success.  Something solid will have been created, we will have done something.

Confusion seems to exist as to what being against fascism might look like. There are dedicated left-wing groups fighting under the Antifa banner, leading some to think that being against fascism is purely a left vs right ideological divide. But it is not. Surely the only people who aren’t against fascism… are fascists?  This is not left wing vs right wing posturing but a fight everybody, be they conservative, liberal, centrist, apolitical or any other point on the political spectrum should surely support fully.

The culture of dance music that we know and love was born out of the struggles of marginalised and vulnerable communities across the world  - and those who assert politics does not belong in dance music are shamefully ignorant of this essential history.  Dance music as a culture would not exist as we know it shorn from that history.  The dynamics of struggle and celebration has always (and will always) run deep in the DNA of Dance.

AF Trax hopes to harness a tiny fraction of this dynamic, to honour that history, to provoke dialogue that is fundamentally anti-racist, anti-sexist, non-homophobic, non transphobic, non-ageist, non ableist & to question and breakdown the class divide.  In these current political times we all need to stand up and be counted, strive to challenge and dismantle the logic of the status quo with all of our might.

The label’s message is very simple. The far right ultimately wish for the destruction of our way of life and indeed the lives of many of the people we love. The message is love. The message is solidarity. The message is No Pasaran - They shall not pass. It is a call to stand together, it is a call to stand up, it is a call to ACT.  Individually we may be powerless, but together we are strong.  

If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention!
