By now counting more than four decades of constant activity, Pierre Bastien erected such a towering and influential body of work that any blurb attempt regarding his music could easily fall into redundancy. Not that his revolving soundworld, deeply personal and unique, has ever stalled into gimmick or self mimicry, being Bastien the tireless explorer whose vision can never be complete, only continuously redefined in a process of discovery equally playful and challenging. So, completely in touch with Discrepant’s ethos.

Returning to the label after 2017 The Mecanocentric Worlds of Pierre Bastien, the french musician, composer and instrument builder, brings an array of instruments from different cartographies and legacies with the appropriately titled Sonic Folkways. Resorting to different types of horns, prepared trumpet, an army of percussion, from gongs and tambourine to castanets and maracas, violin and too many others to mention here, Bastien weaves together a highly textured and hypnotic mosaic that projects an exotica beamed from scraps of the future. ‘Aha!’ in the same interstellar wavelength as Sun Ra’s cosmic tones, ‘Moor’s Room’s almost orchestral tapestry of small percussion and insects or the non-western strings and tunings salvaged from ancient alien ceremonies on ‘Pan’s Nap’.

In an era where so much ink has been shed about world building in experimental music, Bastien can actually claim that to himself. The otherworld is right here, indeed.

Born in a nomad camp in Niger and now a leading figure of desert rock, Mdou Moctar stands out as the most innovative artist in contemporary Saharan music. His unconventional interpretations of Tuareg guitar have pushed him to the forefront of a crowded scene. In contrast to polished “world music” fare, Mdou trades in unrelenting grit and has no qualms about going full shred.

A long time coming, “Ilana” is Mdou's first true studio album. Recorded in Detroit at the tail end of a US tour by engineer Chris Koltay (who met after bonding over ZZ Top's “Tres Hombres”), Mdou lived in studio for a week, playing into the early hours and accompanied by an all-star band: Ahmoudou Madassane's (Les Filles de Illighadad) lighting fast rhythm guitar, Aboubacar Mazawadje's machine gun drums, and Michael Coltun's structured low-end bass.

The result is Mdou's most ambitious record to date, taking tradition into into an ever louder and blistering direction. From the rock anthem “Tarhatazed,” to the Van Halen tapping of “Kamane Tarhanin,” “Ilana” stands amongst the greats of classic rock, albeit accidentally. "I don't know what rock is, I have no idea,” he says, “I only know how to play my style."

There Will Be Blood

It's impossible to overestimate Tyvek's influence and classic status in the global underground punk scene. Originally from Detroit, now based out of Philadelphia, Tyvek has been pumping out classic punk, post-punk, and dub-influenced thump, for years, accumulating an exciting catalogue which is always outstanding when performed live. With a rotating cast of classic players, saxophonists and multi-instrumentalists. including experimental guitarist, Shells, from Ann Arbor. 

"We're Back", is another street anthem, so dear to Detroit's heritage of frantic assertion of our existential status. The beautiful 7-inch record, which I picked up at a Brooklyn show at Unit J in August, is flanked by two instrumentals, setting the tone for the kind of atmospheric back-to-school, end-of-summer freakout which is absolutely necessary for this season.
