This month I am premiering my documentary Future Sound of Mzansi (www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A0ZzKybU1U). Future Sounds of Mzansi is a documentary directed by Spoek Mathambo and Lebogang Rasethaba which aims to explore, express and interrogate, South Africa's electronic music landscape.

This edition of the mix series is an ode to the Kwazulu Natal dominating style called Qgom.

In the 20th century, music and culture from the African Diaspora traveled all over the world.... and East Asia is no exception. In this Hip Deep episode, Afropop explores the different ways that Black music has influenced culture and society in places like China, Japan, Korea and Thailand. China scholar Andrew Jones takes us into the decadent underworld of 1930s Shanghai, where a hybrid form of jazz that mixed African-American sounds with traditional Chinese melodies challenged notions of tradition and modernity as political forces grappled to define the direction of modern China. Then we visit Japan, where homegrown reggae groups such as the Mighty Crown Soundsystem have fostered a massive Jamaican dancehall scene with an attention to detail. Plus, we speak with cultural critic Oliver Wang on the surprising connections between Asia and the development of hip-hop. Produced by Marlon Bishop.

AfroPower Decade: Traditional African Music of the 1980s

In many communities throughout Africa and the diaspora, music and spiritual life are deeply connected through the experience of trance: ritual possession by ancestors, spirits, deities, or simply the trance of communal dancing—usually accompanied by hypnotic melodies and rhythms. In this program, we explore the phenomenon of trance through a survey of musical and spiritual traditions. We'll discover how different cultural and spiritual ideas are expressed musically, how the mathematical complexity of mbira dzavuzimu music may lead to Shona spirit possession, and how experiments in neural imaging give us insight into how the brain works in a state of trance.

Musica Macondo on Jazz FM with Tim Garcia Ft. Anton Spice(Vinyl Factory) in the mix

With a propulsive but understated bass and percussion groove underneath her, vocalist and trombonist Siya Makuzeni whips out her FX pedal, transmuting a mystical lyric about finding self, a higher force or perhaps a loved one into a textured, magical seance.

About SPAZA:
Conceived in the Mushroom Hour lab, SPAZA is a band with no permanent personnel, with each line-up assembled for the express purpose of recording completely improvised or workshopped material. For this, the initial salvo, SPAZA was put together from a group of musicians with individual and collective links to Johannesburg’s jazz, afro funk and experimental electro scenes, namely Siya Makuzeni (vocals, trombone & FX), Nosisi Nokukhanya Ngakane (vocals & FX), Waldo Luc Alexander (electric violin & FX pedals), Gontse Jnsq Makhene (percussion & vocals), Ariel Zamonsky (upright bass) and João Renato Orecchia Zúñiga (synthesizers & electronics).
