This month I am premiering my documentary Future Sound of Mzansi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A0ZzKybU1U). Future Sounds of Mzansi is a documentary directed by Spoek Mathambo and Lebogang Rasethaba which aims to explore, express and interrogate, South Africa's electronic music landscape.

As part of a series of mix featuring the work of some of the artists in the film, I have chosen to focus on the works of Okmalumkoolkat (pronounced Okay-Maloom-Cool-Cat). The mix is filled with rare, exclusive, unreleased tracks and some classic bars from Okmalumkoolkat. 

He is a visionary vocalist/visual artist who's work is an exciting example of the sounds coming out of SA right now. He has collaborated with producers from all over SA as well as far afield as Austria and the UK, to create a unique mixture of futuristic, distinctly South African tracks.

Eclectic and ethereal, Fever Trails combines Ableton Live, synthesizers, guitars, drums, piano and bass with Nicolaas’ signature complex, layered sound. This time the dynamic house music culture of South Africa is reflected by the rhythms and sounds of Batuk’s debut EP, Daniel. Batuk is a creative collective founded by South African electronic music producers Aero Manyelo and Spoek Mathambo; along with the prolific artist and vocalist Manteiga. 

Two original tracks, Daniel and Reya Congo, offer a hypnotic take on tribal house, and feature the vocal talents of frequent collaborator Nandi Ndlovu. Next to the 2 original tracks, are remixes from an international cast of club luminaries including German luso music aficionado Daniel Haaksman, Angolan afrohouse duo Homeboyz Music, and Mozambican best kept secret (till now) producer/DJ Freddy Da Stupid.

“Gira” (a portuguese word meaning to change or turn around) is Batuk’s third single from their forthcoming debut album 'Musica da Terra' to be released on May 27th 2016, on Teka Recordings. 

Batuk’s latest single, is a hard hitting song of protest, calling for change. Addressing the constant war and fighting in Africa, the song is born of dance floor culture, but not of it’s typical hedonistic nature. Gira is a loud call for change from the youth of Africa. There are currently fifteen African countries involved in war, or are experiencing post-war conflict and tension. The statistics are not only shocking/frightening…the time has come for CHANGE. 

The beautiful music video was submitted to Batuk, by a fan who was touched by the song at a live show, and dug through his trove of documentaries and stock footage to create a powerful montage. 

On the EP, the Gira original version is accompanied by two stunning South African house remixes, one by the Ggom stalwarts, Rudeboyz, and another by prolific Johannesburg producer/DJ Eltonnick.

AfroPower Decade: Traditional African Music of the 1980s

Early 2010 track that just dropped on the LV album 'Sebenza' on Hyperdub Records a month ago. The story goes that, Gervase came to SA in late 2009 to visit his family, reached out via internet and subsequently LV produced 2 tracks on my first album Mshini Wam. Work and Limb didn't get on that album and LV put them both on their album, Sebenza http://www.hyperdub.net/releases/view/192/HDBCD015.

South African house music group, Batuk have a new single, Mutumia Ngatha. The track is a heartfelt tribute to Kenyan freedom fighter Muthoni Wa Kirima, underpinned by a banging deep house groove.

Vocalist/songwriter Manteiga and producer Spoek Mathambo form part of the renowned South African electronic music collective, BATUK, which was originally founded in 2015.

Spoek Mathambo is a South African artist, musician, songwriter & filmmaker. With three critically acclaimed solo albums under his belt,  not to mention his collaborative projects Fantasma and Batuk, and a documentary on SA electronic music (Future Sound of Mzansi), Spoek Mathambo is a prolific creative, a true music activist, showcasing and stretching the limits of electronic music and hip hop.

On his new album Tales From A Lost City, producer and rapper Spoek Mathambo revisits his first love, Hip-Hop, with a project steeped in rich storytelling, razor sharp social commentary and an endless reserve of gymnastic flows. The concept album drives a cross section through South Africa 2020, to give a view of a highly complex and volatile society struggling to come to grips with its post Apartheid “rainbow nation” dream/nightmare. Spoek Mathambo takes Hip-Hop, the great crucible of culture, and creates a colorful ride through a diverse set of soundscapes, each emboldening Mathambo’s no-holds-bar approach to songwriting. 

The eclectic self produced album features guest appearances from scratch DJ Raiko and collaborations with Batuk, Spizzy, Mark Mushiva, Vuyo and Daev Martian.
