She got three kids, you just have the holes in your arm
From what the needles did and the k9 fire alarm
We stepped 15 years back in time
To a jail cell and another orange suit, it's been awhile
And another pair of eyes
Saying you're gonna make it this time
Palm pressed against the table
Eyes cast down, wondering if your able
Like if you can really reach what you set out to do
And I wanna make it all right for you
Just want to take you through the life I've seen
Wanna shake you by the shoulders
And show you I see what you could see

Cause I'm looking at that grin
Big old grill reaching up the sides of your face
And thinking about how even your curls look clean
Rehab doubts passed out on the stairs forgetting to eat
How you were curled up on the couch
EMT all pissed off
Cuz you was throwing everything away
Feet on this tile 3rd cell block hallway
but flashing back to the roots of a tree
And you were just out in June you told me
You on a good path, got a whole list of shit to catch back
But that's before the first fresh hit
before the clean needles
Before you were called back in
To the old family I wished you left in Ohio
Before it really all sunk in your veins
But that's still you mayne

This ain't flesh and blood but I'm reading 95 on wrap sheet
Juvenile, but still climbing trees
Dang son, you only 19
And you another one of my kids
My mind keeps playing tricks
I'm seeing you looking just like this
With a degree and a set of goals in your fist
The knives pulling back out of your skin
The old wounds healing up
And your new apartment, and your head clear of the dust
Shaking your hand and telling you I'm proud of everything
I just keep seeing how it oughta be
Keep on thinking you family
A little brother I'm waiting to find that right path
A year down the road you could get that lookback
Just swear you won't give up like you said
That head back up, leave the floor for your toes and the high for your chin
