Hi!!  5 years too late, but I'm a native spanish speaker, and what Jeremy mentioned about spanish having this sort of honorific or respectful way of speaking towards people, and it not being used a lot nowadays, is very true!! I was raised to speak this way to people older or that I don't know very well, but I noticed that from my peers very few of them were raised this way, so the custon is fading away.  Normally, it's used when speaking to older/senior people (be it actual older-than-you people, or someone who is your senior at work, or at school, and not necessarily your senior in age) but when you get to know them better you usually switch to normal speach. It's definitelly not as rigid as the korean usage of respectful speach, though. Most people speak just normally at first meeting.

@isabeloatesee: ㅎㅎㅎ I know what you mean. at my second job (in Korea) someone I've never met walked in and started speaking 반말 to me right away. And it wasn't like he was in his 90s. I was deeply offended because I did not agree to him speaking to me that way.

This episode is really interesting and impressive.

In Spanish I use "Usted: with strangers older than me :)

Actually a lot of Western languages do this ^^" German has the big Sie - Du divide, kind of like going from 반말 to -세요 directly. French has vous - tu. so it's more a two tier system, rather than a complex one like in Korean.
