Tsurugi is an individual deeply embedded in the underground techno scene, with his feet and passion firmly rooted. Tim may well have been our first-ever international attendee, visiting from Washington in the United States. He mentioned coming alone after spotting the lineup on social media, using it as the perfect excuse to revisit the UK for a musical journey. Since then, he has committed to this annual dance, becoming a true hero of Above Below, cherished dearly in our hearts.

Tsurugi has released podcasts for platforms such as Monument, Sure Thing, and The Vortex, while also gracing the stages of clubs in Berlin, Tokyo, and the United States. In his podcasts, Tsurugi smoothly blends nature and techno, reflecting the symbiosis felt in the Chiltern Hills at Above Below. With deep groove and elegance, he guides listeners through a journey that ebbs and flows, keeping them anticipating the next shift in energy. Mysteries of the Deep CXV - Rachel Noon

Washington, DC's @tsurugi has been bringing lush techno dreamscapes to dancefloors everywhere from his base in the capitol (at parties like SEQUENCE and The Vortex), to Brooklyn (at parties like Cipher), all the way to Japan. Coming up through the world of bass music, his style now leans more toward deep techno — with glimmers of percussive, groovy, and playful sounds that remind us of those early bassy influences, and his (contagious, if you've been next to him at a party) enthusiasm for a wide variety of sounds.

"When it comes to electronic music I’m always searching for seductively deep, pensive atmospheres that swirl in full sunken subbass. That’s what resonates me the most where I’m ballast in a calm void before being perpetuated into a elliptical storm.

My hope for the mix is to represent some of those feelings. It was recorded on a few XDJ’s and a Xone:92 mixer on a comfortable Sunday afternoon."

This month we’re taking a deep dive with tdel, an Atlanta-based producer and DJ whose distinct, rhythmic sound has been released across Silent Season, Wage Slave, Don’t Trust Humans, and Mysteries of the Deep. His music is frequently featured on Bright Patterns, and his second hour on this show is a rare treat—a DJ set featuring deep synth drones from the likes of Imaginary Softwoods, Abul Mogard, Biosphere, and his own unreleased material.

SPONTANEOUS AFFINITY is about the communal nature of the dancefloor. It's about communication and feedback. Spontaneous Affinity isn't for the isolated bedroom producer, although we love them, too—it is for those of us who understand music and dance as one of the most powerful sources of personal growth and interpersonal empathy, who are driven by the need to support and elevate one another, and as a result experience the evolution of our creative and connective selves.

Spontaneous Affinity isn't about ego, knowledge, paraphernalia, or exclusivity of any kind. It's about PURE SENSATION. It's about losing track of yourself and merging with a moment. It's about temporary autonomous zones and ephemeral connections. It's about forgetting to Shazam that track or fix your hair. It's about the hours far past dawn when everyone left on the dancefloor has laid their soul bare but still looks beautiful under the harshness of sunlight.

Spontaneous Affinity is NOT A UTOPIAN VISION. It's about understanding how to let go. How to let go of a person. How to let go of a place. How to break a routine even if it hurts. How to appreciate a feeling that can't last forever as if it were eternal, and how to appreciate challenging moments—and challenging sounds—as catalysts for growth.
