Steve Burnett and Olly Stork, between the two of them, have amassed quite the expansive track record, toying with every conceivable form of house, techno, garage, bass music, and mélanges thereof. With last quarter’s lush 12” wax exclusive “Bespoked”, on P&S Records, the two have joined forces and debuted as powerhouse duo 2ndSun.

And in their case, the term “powerhouse” acquires a second meaning. For Tessier-Ashpool’s first catalogue entry, and first statement of its ‘machine music doctrine’, the Liverpool/Cheshire boys deliver a jackin’ house exemplar – effortlessly and elegantly futuristic, seemingly forged from disused power tools in industrial environs, yet wholly dissimilar to some of their UK peers’ facile, by-the-numbers distorted warehouse trappings. This is two masters of their craft, at the top of their game, prescribing the distant future of 4/4 UK club.

Titular track “Shimmer” is the EP’s definitive anthem. Atop an undulating reese bassline to make Saunderson proud, playful chords and an almost trancey gated pattern operate along instantly memorable dubbed-out vocal cuts. “Neglect”, “Pussycat” and “Small Talk” are crisp, crunchy, militant numbers, driven by varispeed vox atop sound design masterclass in motion - heaving, thrashing, pulsing, falling apart and being rebuilt again in real time. Closer “Metro” is the most somber of the five, with nocturnal, melancholy dub chords setting the stage for an unbridled percussive assault.

Hard to put in words even by the most articulate of music didacts - yours truly included -, “Shimmer” is easier done that said. Do it in copious amounts. Results will not vary.

South London’s Nathan Patel, aka Cloaka, has had a prolific two years. Releasing on Four 40 Records, MadTech, and indeed our very own sister label, Infinite Machine, frequently collaborating with Boxwork, and currently nursing his very own breakout label, Heretic, he’s secured a steady foothold in UK clubbing. Completely comfortable within the trappings of house, techno, and bass music by now, his recent remixes have however shown a talent and proclivity for operating outside them, veering heavily into junglist murk, sonic mayhem and rhythmic roads less travelled. As such, his contribution to our Tessier-Ashpool Research & Development series, aptly titled “Adapt”, sees Cloaka taking his sound deeper and further than he ever has.

The title track is a perfect intersection of tribal techno, heyday techstep and modern club innovation. Sparsely punctuated by gut-wrenching, cone-ripping sub bellows, and driven by a percussive non-melody, it rests atop a frantic, unrelenting, and heavily-syncopated beat that is sure to turn heads in any club scenario. For my Optimix (the first of many to come), I opted to coax the subtle electro backbone of the original and shove it front and center – early 90’s sonics abound, the 808/909 has a field day, arps ricochet across the spectrum and submerged-motifs-to-make-Dresciya-proud interject when appropriate. I also took the opportunity to write a primer on core Tessier-Ashpool aesthetics, in remix form.

On the virtual flip, “Each & Every” sounds like an elaboration on the “half-step techno” that I’d previously dubbed Vlsonn’s work. In this case, however, it’s “quarter-step techno”, and whereas Vlsonn’s structure of choice lent his tracks a “hypnotic and engrossing reverse feel”, Cloaka’s structure of choice on “Each & Every” goes to the logical extreme, with each bar containing a single viscera-churning kick that seems to command a gravity field of its own. As it sucks you in, hectic sirens and playful sidesticks provide the requisite brief respite, resulting in a wonderful stop-start mechanic. “Bandala” closes things off nicely with a seemingly reductive garage beat carrying a slo-mo jungle track on top. As reeses coil and entwine, sonars ping and beautiful junglist digi-organ chords drift in and out, the ethnic vocal cuts inject a bit of a human element to what has heretofore been a thorough automaton romp.

Tokyo siren @Cuushe returns with Night Lines, her first release for Cascine and fourth for Japan's flau label. Night Lines is presented as a noir storybook, unfolding along four tracks to expose a haunting soundscape, complete with bad guys, funeral processions and skyscraper-sized floral arrangements. The lyrics were penned by Cuushe with underlying productions composed by aus. Many sounds were sourced from films, animations and field recordings, with designs of obscuring timelines and the perception of reality.

Cold, metallic FM subs seemingly collapse under their own colossal weight, before deftly shifting and redirecting it, A whimsical arp graciously sweeps across stereo space, while delicate, and precise grimey 909 drum programming offsets the disjointed CD-skip riddims underneath. Loz Contreras - Sarajevo (Blackmill Remix)

Since its debut release in September 2014, Liar's Tessier-Ashpool Recordings has stuck to a strict doctrine of 'machine music', offering sonic science-fiction from an far-reaching array of underground artists. Yet another new recruit, Savvas Kattamis - aka Transporon - closes out 2015 for the label with a 4-track EP of mind-bending techno and intergalactic electronica.

Our personal favourite, 'Inhalor' is perhaps the most danceable track on the record, but that's not to say it doesn't compete with the others on an experimental level. Kattamis presents submerged bass and crushed beats, shattered under their own immense weight. Countering this darkness, a cloud of tinkling atmospherics and sweeping vocals creates an absorbing artificial reality.
