Spoon Wizard - Operator EP

Almost 21 years to the day since its original release at the Digital Symposium demo party on the 24th October 1992, I present my remake of the Jesus On E's demo audio I originally created 7,673 moons ago.

Recreated and sequenced from scratch, the majority of sounds and samples have been re-sourced from the original (or better) sources and span some 80 channels of audio. The remake closely follows the original, with some artistic embellishments and modern production techniques added along the way.  The remake slightly exceeds the original's runtime, totalling nearly 28 minutes.

Special thanks must go to my friend Ben Foster and acapellas4u.co.uk forum members djshadesuk and drunkenbaker, whose input has been invaluable in identifying and locating the samples of the era.

Pantaloon has been written and produced by Exeter based producer The Spoon Wizard (AKA Graham Gray) in his home based studio and is the first tune to be produced by him in over twelve months after a break from production after getting bored with the hard house material that he had been writing.

Straight out of Exeter this one, the very man who has brought us one of the finest breaks clubs in the country (Beatz &amp; Bobz to those in the know) kicks of his new label with his neighbor from downstairs. Pantaloon is restrained nu- skool breaks, very unpredictable- just when you think the dirty great byline will drop it carries on rolling out its fine groove keeping its technoid sounds morphing in and out of the arrangement working as a functional (excuse the pun) DJ Tool. Imagine what Photek would sound like at 130 BPM and you are pretty close. Also Phantom Beats take care of the business on the flip, staying close to the original with a slightly beefed up bass. More Please!

The Spoon Wizard is known to his playmates as Graham Gray whose changed direction from his previous hard house incarnation. The original is joined by a mix from Plastic Raygun. Tough driving minimal breaks with some cool sounds to keep the interest level up there. This will work on any dance floor.

This is the first release on a new label from Exeter and is the work of the Future Underground Nation (F.U.N. for short) who run the 'Beats and Bobs' night in the city's Cavern Club. Enough blurb - what does it sound like? Well, the original offers some pretty deep and unsettling dancefloor beats, but the one I'm into is Cardiff's Phantom Beats remix. The depth is still there, but with a little extra tuffness and an altogether stronger vibe - this is the one that drops.

The second release from Functional Breaks again features Exeter based producer The Spoon Wizard. 'Shoe Monkey' is the first track from The Spoon Wizard to feature local rapper Neil who is working with SW on his album project. 'Shoe Monkey' is in same funky breaks style of Pantaloon but this one keeps on building and has all ready caused mayhem at Beatz &amp; Bobz where it has been played for the last few months.

FB 003 'Gizmo' Written &amp; Produced by SILKEN Mixes from General Midi and The Spoon Wizard .

Release number three from Functional Breaks features another West Country act, Exeter based SILKEN. Jon Dennis and Adrian Clarinda have been writing music as Tour De Force for the last 5 years recently starting their own trance label Transcend, remixing for Manga USA and contributing two track for the soundtrack for computer game Urban Kaos from Idos alongside A.D.F. Way Out West and Basement Jaxx. Adrian and Jon want SILKEN to be more than a studio outfit already working on a live show they intend to be ready to perform live shows to coincide with the release of their debut album in late 2000. Gizmo is the first track to be released from this breaks project that will also see them providing remixes for Functional Breaks. Gizmo is a fat funky breakbeat tune, which has already become a favourite of Hybrid, Hyper, Tayo, and Danny McMillan on CDR with the track getting a play on Danny's show on Kiss FM. The mixes come from Bristol's General Midi with some dirty bass lines and The Spoon Wizard again showing his skill for producing minimal but ever building breaks tunes FB 003 SILKEN 'Gizmo' Full Release 10/07/00

Silken Gizmo (Functional Breaks) Only their third release, yet already this West Country Label has got a good reputation. Silken are renegade trancers who've decided to hang up their fluro undies and join the funk flowers instead. All three mixes are strong with the original nestling up to reworkings by General Midi and Spoon Wizard. Fairly minimal beats are joined by soundtracky washes, tough riffs and even tougher basslines. Very Functional.

Silken - Gizmo (Functional Breaks) Big up the West Country Massive as silken become the latest artist to make an impression on the scene with this stunning little number for the Functional Breaks Stable. Functional Breaks are now on their third release (every one a winner) and ' Gizmo is likely to cause the biggest stir so far as Spoon Wizard and General Midi (not again!) take the controls and carry out admiral jobs on the remix tip. Another must have release.

Silken Gizmo (Functional Breaks) More West Country action, this time from Exeter-based Gizmo. Backed with a General Midi nip and tuck, the original mix relies heavily on a punchy tech-bass sequence and swirling effects, but the key to the track is its simplicity. Perfect for big systems.

Silken - Gizmo (Spoon Wizard Remix)

The manic drum 'n' bass of Spec X-Ray's original is complemented by a broad selection of mixes - French house from JJ Smoothie, rockabilly lounge from Berlin's Stereo De Luxe and a blinding breakbeat mix from Spoon Wizard, an artist signed to Exeter (UK) based Functional Breaks. The common denominator are the vocal samples, lifted from a horror B-movie. But while these samples get annoying pretty quickly on the other tracks, they fit perfectly into Spoon Wizard's eerie late-nite breaks mix, his best production to date and easily the best track on this 12". Spooky sounds punctuated by lovely acid tweaks set the mood before a devious nu skool styled bassline is let loose to cause havoc on the dancefloor - a killer track!

Plastic Raygun - Not Children of God (Spoon Wizard Remix)

One year on and Functional Breaks are set to release the fifth single on the label and the third single from the Spoon Wizard 'Me and Spoonice' is the second track from The Spoon Wizard to feature local rapper Neil and is to be included on the forthcoming album from The Spoon Wizard which is due in the spring. Keeping it 'West of Bristol for productions' all the mixes on this one were produced within one mile of each other demonstrating the amount of musical talent there is in Exeter. The first mix comes from deep housers Blue Effect who have in the past worked with Tom Middleton and are currently getting interest from several labels. The second mix comes from The Spoon Wizard's label mates Silken whose first single Gizmo kicked up a storm back in the summer and they don't disappoint with this mix.

Mixer Mag USA

Functional Breaks offers up some UK new school for the decks. The original mix stays true to the Spoon Wizard style and has a mellow tempo with hip-hop lyrics dropped on top. Dark synths pan under the track to give it depth and the new-school analog is a little more hidden on this track than on most coming out of the UK right now. The Blue Effect mix is more on the jazzy/atmospheric side of breaks. Reminds me of older Jamie Myerson stuff put to a breakbeat tempo. The real floor mover on this 12" is the Silken mix. Deep progressive breaks that take over the original vocals chop them up, filter them and spit them back out. The beats are heavy and deep and will definitely move a peak hour crowd. The interesting thing on this mix is that the acid lines seem to have been influenced by some of the progressive breaks coming out of Florida. This is good stuff. Buy it. 5

Spoon Wizard - Me 'n' Spoonice

Bath's Stabilizer gives us a funky little number for FB's sixth release. This original mix has a nice little groove to it on the more mellower and funkier end of the breaks spectrum. Very groovy indeed. The Phantom Beats provide one of the other mixes, with their growling basslines that they have become well known for, driving the track to a new level. The Spoon Wizard, taking time out from working on his upcoming "Believe or Suffer" album, provides the second mix. This record has a little bit for everyone and continues with the high standards that we have come to expect from Functional Breaks.

Stabilizer - People Come Up (Spoon Wizard Remix)

Written &amp; Produced by The Brothers of Funk and Darren Chapman Mixes from Spoon Wizard and Sensei

While on tour in the US last October to promote his mix CD 'Beatz &amp; Bobz Vol 1' Darren Chapman teamed up with Florida's breakbeat bad boys 'The Brothers of Funk' to produce his first record. Three days in the studio with Johnny, Kimmi (owners of Freakin Music) and Oscar and the first collaboration between Freakin Music and Functional Breaks is ready to rock the dancefloors of the world in the shape of 'G13' Mixes come from Functional Break's Spoon Wizard who funks the tune up, with the other mix coming from Florida outfit Sensei (who are Johnny Dangerously and electro DJ/Producer BFX) take tune a bit harder and darker. Sensei will be releasing one of their own productions 'I'm The Only one' on Functional Breaks in the near future. G13 gets a full release on Functional Breaks in June 2000 and was promo'd on vinyl at this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami Florida with excellent reactions.

Darren Chapman teams up with the Freakin label artists Brothers of Funk for a deep, meaty and beaty Breakbeat stormer. Drivin' and relentless this track is a ruthless addition to the dancefloor, comes complete with an excellent Stabilizer mix. 4.5

Brothers of Funk v Darren Chapman G 13 (Functional Breaks) The collaboration between Exeter and Florida has resulted in the best FB release for a while. The original is a funky take on the breaks scene with a driving bassline. The first remix from Spoon Wizard takes it funkier. Leaving the electro beat to the side. Sensei then get on the remix duty and go on all out attack. A thumping kick drum electro style meets a bassline that comes at you like the tornadoes that rip through Florida itself.

Brothers of Funk v Darren Chapman G 13 (Functional Breaks) **** Another Quality release for Exeter's premier beat freaks, this is collaboration between the local DJ and Florida breakbeat duo, Brother of Funk. An electro - esque creation, the skippy breaks take a back seat to the driving acidic riff, low resonating b-line and synth stabs reminiscent of old school euro techno. Fear not its not full on hoover house and is subtle enough for breakbeat and prog house DJs alike. Spoon Wizards mix strips it down into a funky minimalist groove, while Florida's Sensei take it into darker techno territory. A solid Ep for all break heads and prog housers out there

Brothers of Funk vs. Darren Chapman - G13 (Spoon Wizard Remix)

Blue Effect has their first full release on Functional Breaks and they carry on with their take on the deeper side of the breaks sound. Mixes from the ever regular Spoon Wizard who has finished his album project 'Believe or Suffer' which will be seeing a full release in the New Year and from Stabilizer who takes us on a housey tip giving the package something a little different than his recent releases for us and Plastic Raygun.

Functional Breaks have been a pretty consistent label since their inception, now though, with their eleventh release they have broken their own mold and released a Break-Step / Step Breaks / Steppy (whatever) thing.

Don't get me wrong it's actually a pretty deep and groovy affair, just different from a label that had established its sound and if ever a sub genre split a scene it's this 'Step' business. Skipping beats and some nice mellow stabs kick 'Aquathought' along nicely, whilst the production is as crisp as could be. Most Breakheads who don't do the Steppy stuff should check it out, it might just change your mind. Remixes come from Stabilizer going down a House route and Spoon Wizard, who always remixes Functional releases and does the job well enough here.

Blue Effect - Aquathought (Spoon Wizard Remix)

Functional Breaks keep it South West again returning to Bath for the second full release on the label from Stabilizer, Stef's latest is a two steppy acidy breaks tune with another of his trade mark vocal samples. Back to Exeter for the mixes with local label stalwarts The Spoon Wizard and Silken. Spoon Wizard has just finished his soon to be released debut album 'Believe or Suffer' and drops in another of his brooding building funky mixes.

Up &amp; coming breaks producer Stabilizer brings us his latest offering in the form of "Carbon", a monster acid-fuelled steppy number. Well known for producing funky beats and solid b-lines without venturing into "breakbeat garage" territory, Stabilizer has managed to do it again with a tune that builds like a brickie on speed....but without the visible butt crack! A subtle vocal sample rounds it off complementing the build, yet not taking over the track totally rendering it accessible to all DJ's whether (like me) you a fan of vocals, or not. Mixes come courtesy of Spoon Wizard and Silken, both of whom are busy finishing future material for the label, including the forthcoming Spoon Wizard album "Believe Or Suffer". Both mixes would work well on the floor, but stick to the original to make 'em really go crazy! 8/10

Spoon Wizard - Spork From Afar

Functional Breaks hits double figures with Silken's first single release for nearly 12 months. Silken have been busy writing music for computer games and material for their own label Trancend. Their new release 'Reach Out' is another progressive roller in the same vein as last years Gizmo.Remix duties fall again to label stalwart Spoon Wizard, who has turned in another mix that just builds and builds in his trademark style.

Spoon Wizard - There Is No Spoon

This release see's the debut for our new act Frakkar who, sticking to our policy of our artists coming from west of Bristol hail from Swansea. Remix duties fall to Spoon Wizard who pumps the track up showing a shift in style after finishing his debut album. This is probably the most 'for the floor' track to come from Spoony for quite a while and is going to be part of their live set for their spring tour.

Track one from Spoon Wizard's debut album ''Believe or Suffer"

Spoon Wizard may be an outfit that is very unfamiliar to Australian audiences. They have however, developed a fan base in Europe, playing at Glastonbury amongst other festivals as well as winning the support of DJ's and acts such as Dj Dan, Hybrid, Way Out West, Stanton Warriors, Anthony Pappa and Jimmy Van M. 'Believe or Suffer' will be their first album to gain a full release in Australia, something I'm sure that pleases Graham Gray and Neil Anderson who comprise Spoon Wizard. After this release however, I'm certain breaks fans will be more aware of this highly talented duo, because this album is very, very impressive.

The opening track of the album, "Hardened" gets straight into the action - rapid breaks with sweeping strings - a fantastic opening. "Seven" displays Spoon's more laid back approach with Neil at vocals, while "Spoonkey" merges more progressive sounds with breakbeat. A rework of their first ever breakbeat tune, "Pantaloon" is included. "Stop Forking About" gives us a hint of acid breaks. "Cutlery Shuffle" is a definite highlight of the album with Neil's vocals again utilized, as well as solid beats and an uplifting melody. The album concludes with "Pink Saturday", trancey breaks that are sure to leave you more than satisfied.

A great album, and a great future are ahead of these lads. Based on the evidence of this album, Spoon Wizard are sure to be a household name in the breaks scene. Give this album a listen, you will not be disappointed.

Amsterdam's Lee (who runs the Moving Target label) laces a minimal-yet-propulsive funky thumper for Berlin's ascending breakbeat imprint Dangerous Drums that bumps with tight bass and flanged chords. Britain's Spoon Wizard rolls some tight scratches and arrangements on his old-skoolin' electro-riffic Cutlery mix. Excellent breaks drama for that ass.

Now this is darker than night. Be prepared to cower behind furniture with fear as Spoon Wizard takes you on a trip through the deep dark catacombs of your mind. Another pumping two-step breaks track, but this time it's on an eerie tip.

After listening to this in the car a bit over the last few months I've made some subtle changes to the mix:

- Tidied some of the low-fi transitions (was especially uneven at the end of the track)
- Opted for a saw instead of sine LFO for the mid-break wobble to give it more punch
- Altered the LFO rate in some places of the mid-break wobble to add some more variety
- Reduced the overall compression of the track as I think it was a bit too much

Definitely finally final this time!

Spoon Wizard - Bass Pout

Originally composed by Giles Soulet for French Atari ST game 'Sapiens' back in the late 80's. This was the 2nd track that was played in the game and used sampled audio - something that rarely featured on this platform as the 3-channel PCM sound chip was never designed for this purpose.

The game also featured the ability to output the audio as MIDI, so using loopback tools and an emulator I painstakingly recorded and reorganised the MIDI data using modern production tools.

Thanks again to Giles Soulet for the original. I hope he likes my remake.
