Rhinestone Pickup Truck is the work of Applachian singer-songwriter Tristen Colby, a self-described glitter grunge project that originally started out as a way to pass the time with home recordings but soon grew into something much more. After a series of releases since mid 2020, Rhinestone Pickup Truck has now signed with Stockholm, Sweden based indie label PNKSLM Recordings for the release of new EP Adore Me. 

Finding himself moving in a different direction towards a sound more akin to early Weezer or Teenage Fanclub, and opting to work together with Jake Orall of long-time heroes JEFF the Brotherhood, Adore Me is Colby’s strongest work yet and includes four tracks covering broken relationships, anxiety and insecurity - and finding your way through it all.

Rhinestone Pickup Truck - "Sinking"

Rana Eid est sound designer et réalisatrice. Depuis près 40 ans, elle enregistre les ambiances de Beyrouth, sa ville natale. Elle enregistre donc les sons de la guerre civile (1975-1990), la reconstruction, la guerre de 2006, la révolution civile de 2019, l’explosion du port le 4 août 2020 et enfin l’effondrement actuel du Liban. Aujourd'hui, elle commente ses propres archives sonores qui racontent son pays meurtri et une ville qui retient son souffle. Marine Vlahovic (Carnets de correspondante) a rencontré Rana Eid une première fois en 2014 avant de la retrouver quelques années plus tard. Un manifeste sensible sur l’importance du son dans nos mémoires. 

Ce documentaire est lauréat de l'appel à projets 2021 du ministère de la Culture.

Né à Dakar en 1990, Mohamed Mbougar Sarr est devenu – en 2021 et à 31 ans – le premier écrivain d’Afrique subsaharienne consacré par le plus prestigieux des prix littéraires français, le Goncourt, pour « La plus secrète mémoire des hommes », enquête au long cours et labyrinthe narratif enivrant, inspiré par le destin tragique du Malien Yambo Ouologuem (éditions Jimsaan / Philippe Rey). Mais avant le succès, ce wonderboy des lettres africaines était déjà l’auteur de trois romans diablement maîtrisés, aux sujets casse-gueule : « Terre ceinte » (2015, sur les milices djihadistes), « Silence du chœur » (2017, sur l’accueil de 72 migrants en Sicile) et « De purs hommes » (2018, sur l’homophobie au Sénégal). Il vit et travaille aujourd'hui à Beauvais (Oise).

« Il faut surveiller ce petit. » En 2014, Léonora Miano lit « La Cale », l’une des premières nouvelles d’un écrivain sénégalais de 24 ans. Frappée par la justesse de cette évocation des horreurs de la traite négrière qu’on croirait échappée d’un recueil de Conrad, la romancière franco-camerounaise formule un avertissement qui a l’épaisseur, aujourd’hui, d’une prophétie. Il fallait garder un œil, oh que oui, sur Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, fils de médecin, fan de foot et champion de Scrabble, dévoreur de dictionnaires, « fruit du croisement » d’au moins deux spiritualités : d’un côté, sa culture musulmane, de l’autre la culture sérère de son enfance, du nom de cette ethnie qui rassemble environ 20 % de la population du Sénégal. Un peuple essentiellement agricole, dit-il, « structuré autour d’une tradition animiste liée aux rites de passage et attentive aux ancêtres, au prochain, à l’hospitalité ».

Mais qui est donc ce jeune vieux sage à l’éloquence élégante, que la France découvre en novembre 2021 – lorsque celui-ci reçoit, à 31 ans, le Goncourt pour son quatrième roman, « La plus secrète mémoire des hommes » ? Quel fut le parcours de ce modeste étudiant qui parle, depuis ses 6 ans, le sérère, le wolof (langue vernaculaire du Sénégal) et le français ? « Lorsque j’écris, explique-t-il, je dois transposer en français l’imaginaire de ma langue maternelle. Je ne traduis pas d’une langue à l’autre, mais d’un imaginaire à l’autre. Je reste donc un étranger dans la langue française, qui est un héritage de la colonisation – ce qui peut mettre très mal à l’aise. Plutôt que d’en faire une difficulté, j’ai décidé d’assumer cette condition : une aventure ambiguë », conclue-t-il, en reprenant le titre du grand roman d’un maître et compatriote, Cheikh Hamidou Kane.

Dans ce premier épisode, partons à l’aventure dans les ambigüités fertiles de Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, du pagne de ses grands-mères à la bibliothèque du lycée militaire de Saint-Louis, jusqu’à son arrivée dans l’Oise, sa thèse abandonnée sur les débuts de la littérature postcoloniale en Afrique francophone, et… un blog, qui fut la serre de sa vocation, la serre de Sarr.
