This episode Sam Brady of Glasgow University gives a paper for the BSSH Sport & Leisure History seminar on sporting wheelchairs and adaptive technology in the Paralympics. 

Building on his own bank of oral history interviews with practitioners he explains the way in which wheelchair users increasingly became involved in the design of their equipment and how technological change affects the way in which Paralympic sports adapt over time.

The Welsh origins of tennis with Spencer Vignes

This episode features co-author of chapter 8 in the ‘International Community Development Practice’ book, Michelle Dunscombe from the Jeder Institute in Victoria, Australia; and one of the case study contributors Jaya Manchikanti from IndianCare based in Melbourne, Victoria.

With Ron Hustedde, Michelle wrote the chapter ‘Building Leadership and Infrastructure’ and she discusses the importance of diverse leaders and the need for ‘safe’ spaces in which leaders can be supported, nurtured and develop their ‘leadership muscle’.

Community development practitioner Jaya Manchikanti explains how she set up IndianCare in 2013 after a year of consultation and engagement with communities with Indian heritage to provide an infrastructure for support to and advocacy for them. She provides an insight into her approach to leadership of that organisation; how she has respected diversity within the Indian community, and not just between them and other Australian communities; and how she went about supporting her successor as President of Indian Care to take over from her.

International Community Development Practice - Diversity in leadership

This episode features co-authors of chapter 3 in the ‘International Community Development Practice’ book, Anita Paul and Kalyan Paul from the Pan Himalayan Grassroots Development Foundation; and one of the case study contributors Tsetsgee Gavaa from the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) based in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The episode explores theme 2 in the International Standards for Community Development Practice: 

Understanding and engaging with communities, and building and maintaining relationships with individuals and groups.

Anita explains what is meant by the term engagement – a term many of us use on a daily basis. While Kalyan provides specific examples from his experience in the Pan-Himalayan region around engaging communities to improve access to safe drinking water; and talks through the basic skills that practitioners require for meaningful engagement.

Tsetsgee Gavaa provides an insight into how her organisation ADRA has engaged communities over their involvement in Mongolia’s first organic farming programme.

International Community Development Practice – Engaging communities

In this Oral History recording produced in the run up to the UEFA Women's EURO 2022, Rebekah Grassby shares her footballing story, and joy that girls of today can fulfill their footballing dreams.

We hear how as an 8yr old, she was the first girl to play for her local team, but dreams of taking football further were just fantasy back then. Rebekah celebrates how times have changed, and how the increasing visibility and coverage of Women's football means young girls can finally dream of a life in football, and follow inspirational players in the women's game, in a way that didn't exist 20 years ago.

Rebekah explains how her love for the sport remained, but it was a move to Sheffield as a student that saw her return to the pitch with the Sheffield Medics Women's Football Club, and more recently with Football for Foodbanks, both of which have inclusivity at their heart and believe "Anyone Can Play."

Rebekah looks forward to this summer's tournament and celebrates the historic significance and positive decision to make the footballing home of Sheffield a host city

In this episode Amina Abu-Shahba from Swansea University and writer David Brayley discuss some of the activities taking place in Swansea as part of a year-long project celebrating the city's sporting heritage.

The project celebrates a range of sports and sporting venues. From Swansea's passion for surfing, to the former Vetch Field. From cricket and rugby union at St Helens, to the local parks and pitches.

As well as exhibitions and collections, two films have been produced. Funded by Swansea University, The Heritage Lottery and the Wales Innovation Fund, 'In The Blood' explores sporting lives in Swansea and can be viewed here:

Swansea’s Year of Sporting Heritage | Blwyddyn Dreftadaeth Chwaraeon Abertawe

In this episode – which coincides with National Sporting Heritage Day 2023 (#NSHD2023) – we are joined by Pippa Britton, Sporting Heritage’s newest Ambassador, and first from/in Wales.

Pippa discusses her own sporting story in archery in which she competed internationally, including at two Paralympics. She also explains her motives for serving on the governance boards of several organisations such as Sport Wales and UK Anti-Doping since she finished competing.

Part of Pippa’s role will be to champion and support the development of the Strategic Framework for the Sporting Heritage of Wales funded by the Welsh Government.
