Some of my favorite pieces relate to the sea so I thought I would create something along those lines. To capture the immensity of the ocean I decided to pile four major triads (C, D, E, and F#)on top of each other and let then rock back and forth like waves lapping on the side of Santiago's boat. I added the song of the fisherman to the mix and, at the climax of the piece, the basses and cellos menace us as did the sharks in the great novel by Hemingway. After I had finished the piece I wanted to give it a title and realized that mood of the thing reminded me of the endless days the luckless fisherman spent sailing the Caribbean.
