Today, Victorian-based indie-rock outfit, Square Dance Caller release their new single, Swimming Pool.

Reminiscent of early years of Talking Heads and Aussie comrades British India and Bad Pony, Square Dance Caller used one of the world’s longest and most stringent COVID lockdowns in Victoria as a means to embrace time standing still and wrote their debut album. Feeling inspired by Arctic Monkeys album AM, the band threw themselves into music, writing as many demos as they could. 

“I wrote this song during the second lock down in Melbourne in 2020,” tells Brendan. “Stuck in my room, I'd been mucking around with drum loops and came across a cool beat that I liked. It started with the bass riff and grew from there. I'd never really written a song like that before, but I really enjoyed trying a different approach.”

Brothers Mick and Brendan refined their musicianship in a rock band before forming Square Dance Caller, and take refined inspiration from bands such as The Eagles, The Clash and The Beatles.

“We toured up the east coast a bunch of times and also all around Victoria and over to Adelaide. We had a manager, booking agent and played some cool gigs supporting bands like the Getaway Plan and Thirsty Merc. Like a lot of bands, drummers were our biggest issue. During BK we had 14 different drummers play with us,” shares Brendan. 
 
“This time around we wanted to do things differently, both sonically and with the line up. Mick is a great guitarist and vocalist but drums was his first instrument which he started playing at age 12, so with this band we decided to get him back on drums to make our rhythm section tight. Dave Grohl and Don Henley from the Eagles are two of his big inspirations.”
 
Both Mick and Brendan are prolific songwriters, and their literal brotherly bond makes songwriting a synergised process.

“We both write songs and sing and being brothers we find it easy to throw musical ideas around together and be brutally honest whether we like things or not. Rather than gigging crazily we've spent more time on the writing & recording aspect of this project.”

Square Dance Caller is the Melbourne groove rock brainchild of brothers and multi-instrumentalists and songwriters, Brendan and Michael Etherington.

A nod to their late grandfather's tenure as a real-life Square Dance Caller, the band draws inspiration from outfits Arctic Monkeys, The Clash and Gorillaz.

SDC's debut 2021 album 'Celebrity' received resounding success across indie music blogs, college radio and playlists throughout Europe and America. While the single 'Somebody Like You', from the band's second release "Daze in Technicolor", garnered praise from Milky Music, The Music and The Partae, to name a few.

The band's highly anticipated new single 'London Underground' was released in 2023 and lead to a successful UK tour wowing crowds and establishing a name for themselves through captivating and engaging live shows.

2024 will see the brothers capitalising on their momentum with new music and more Australian and UK touring.
