Throwing The This

This track is made solely from the calls and songs of summer migrants birds to the UK. 

The percussion is Whinchat, Wheatear, Sedge Warbler and Grasshopper Warbler. 

The fluity, synthy and bassy notes are all sampled notes of Blackcap and Garden warbler song.

There is also Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Swallow, House Martin, Sand Martin, Tree Pipit, Spotted flycatcher, Swift and Cuckoo.

I  heard my first yesterday -  a Chiffchaff - always a highlight of the year for me - so this is to celebrate their arrival on my 'patch' - these are species that will be arriving over the next weeks. Blog: http://robymilling.blogspot.co.uk

Pointing at Things for Pleasure and Profit

I got the melody by placing staves on the photo, so hips become notes. 
ALL the sounds were produced by the rose (with my help) - samples of dropping hips, hitting & sloshing branches, striking a guitar etc - changed pitch of samples, put samples through effects etc.

I was asked to make this bird music track to play on German radio to promote the German equivalent of the RSPB garden bird count.

Face Dance
 
This is entirely sounds made by my face - for 'About Face' - a community arts project to explore the human face.

So the percussion is tapping, rubbing, slapping my face (it starts quietly)
 
I played my ukulele with my face – struck strings with chin and nose.
 
I didn’t want to use any sounds made by my mouth – clicking, hissing or anything like that because then it might as well been beat boxing or even singing.
 
Some of the sounds are more or less raw – but as I had quite a limited musical palette there are a lot of treatments to the sounds – changing pitch, all kinds of effects, guitar pedals etc.
 
I changed the pitch of the ukulele note to get a scale then ‘played’ it on the computer.

There's the idea of passage of time - clock ticking - the picture is a 'clockface' with an amalgamation of my young face / older face, but it's supposed to be celebratory and optimistic  - a dance of life.

Canary shouldered Thorn

I made this track last year, the title i gave it seems to have taken on more meaning -what with lockdown. It's a track I made entirely with blackbird sounds  (plus sleigh bells)

The melody is 'Blackbird' by the Beatles.

Some of the blackbird sounds are untreated, with others I've  changed the pitch - for example  I got a bass drum sound by lowering the pitch of the 'tak' call, and i got a musical scale by changing the pitch of sample of the song
And I added a number of effects such as reverb, echo, guitar pedals to get the 'synthy' sound.

Christmas fans might feel slightly short changed by the claim that it's a 'Christmas remix' as that amounts to the addition of some sleigh bells from about half way 🙂
