The name Silversun Pickups was derived from Silversun, a liquor store located across from Silverlake Lounge. One of the band's friends would often arrive at the store late at night to buy liquor, making a "Silversun pickup". In interviews, the band has said its name is more of "a state of mind".

"Iris" is a song by American alternative rock band Goo Goo Dolls. Originally written for the soundtrack of the 1998 film City of Angels, the song was later included on the band's sixth album, Dizzy Up the Girl. The song was released as a single on April 1, 1998. After completing the first-edit on the film City of Angels, co-producer Bob Cavallo and his music producer son Rob Cavallo decided to take along musical artists to a viewing to create the soundtrack. Bob took Alanis Morissette whilst Rob took the Goo Goo Dolls. The following morning Morissette called Rob, and asked him to produce the song "Uninvited" which she had written afterwards as a demo. Shortly afterwards that same day, John Rzeznik called Rob with a song he had written called "Iris", a power ballad. In a 2013 interview with Songfacts, lead singer Rzeznik explained how he wrote the song: "I was thinking about the situation of the Nicolas Cage character in the movie. This guy is completely willing to give up his own immortality, just to be able to feel something very human. And I think, 'Wow! What an amazing thing it must be like to love someone so much that you give up everything to be with them.' That's a pretty heavy thought." Rzeznik named the song after country folk singer-songwriter Iris DeMent, after he noticed her name in a concert listing in the LA Weekly newspaper.

Tom used the '50s progression (also known as the "Heart and Soul" chords, the "Stand by Me" changes, the doo-wop progression) is a chord progression and turnaround used in Western popular music. The progression, represented in Roman numeral analysis is: I–vi–IV–V. For example, in C major: C–Am–F–G. As the name implies, it was common in the 1950s and early 1960s and is particularly associated with doo-wop. The first popular song to use the progression was Blue Moon, written in 1934. This inspired Heart and Soul in 1938 and Blueberry Hill in 1940.

Play It Again is a song written by the Dallas Davidson and Ashley Gorley songwriting machine.  Luke Bryan recorded it on the Crash My Party album.  I think Ashley Gorley wrote five or six songs on that record.  Most of the songs are I-V-vi-IV.  But this one is just a simple D-A-E progression.

I found this version of the song on the Finding Wildflowers album.  I like it better than the version on the Wildflowers album.  Tom plays the song in the key of F on his acoustic guitar and then plays another track on the fifth fret in the key of C.  I tried to mellow it out a little more.  The song has suck a great feel to it.  I originally played lead and rhythm on my ES-335 straight into the recorder, but it came across a little flat.  So I plugged my Vox AC-30 into the mixing board.  A lot brighter, so I had to use the bridge pickup and then both.

Crawling Back To You

Written by Michael Stipe.  He didn't write the whole lyric down and just had a piece of paper with a few words. He sang it and walked out. The following day, the hastily improvised take was deemed good enough and it wasn't re-recorded.

Fun & Games is the third album by the American pop/rock band The Connells, released in 1989. It was recorded primarily at Fort Apache Studios, in Cambridge, MA, with additional recording at Studio 900 in New York City and Reflection Studio in Charlotte, NC.

The song recounts events that took place in 1965 (two years prior to the time of the original recording), when Arlo Guthrie and a friend spent Thanksgiving Day at a deconsecrated church on the outskirts of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, which their friends Alice and Ray Brock had been using as a home. As a favor to them, Guthrie and the friend volunteered to take their large accumulation of garbage to the local dump in their VW Microbus, not realizing until they arrived there that the dump would be closed for the holiday. They eventually noticed another pile of trash that had previously been dumped off a cliff near a side road, and added theirs to the accumulation before returning to the church for Thanksgiving dinner.

Brothers Terry and John Talbot played together in several local bands around Indianapolis, Indiana and later in Chicago. After their group Sounds Unlimited disbanded, in 1969 they formed Mason Proffit with a focus on the emerging blend of folk, country and rock that would come to be called country rock. "Two Hangmen", written by the older brother, Terry, was released on their first album, Wanted, and became a regional hit. This helped their second Happy Tiger album, Movin' Toward Happiness, chart on the Billboard 200. Wanted was nominated for Best Album Cover for the 1971 Grammy Awards, and was mistakenly listed under the title Mason Proffit. In 1972, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records and continued touring, performing up to 300 concerts each year. Some of Mason Proffit's opening acts during that time included The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, John Denver, and Mac Davis. Their country-rock-bluegrass style was innovative yet difficult to place in a marketing genre. Their live shows were high-energy. And once, while jamming with The Earl Scruggs Revue, John Hartford and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Scruggs called John Talbot "the best banjo player I've ever heard." The Talbot brothers opened for the Eagles on a national tour.

Weezer's album "Make Believe" was released in 2005. Despite commercial success, Make Believe got a mixed reception from critics. The second single released from Make Believe was "We Are All on Drugs". MTV refused to play the song, so Weezer re-recorded the lyrics by replacing "on drugs" with "in love" and renaming the song "We Are All in Love".

I've always loved this song by the Austin band Fastball.  I love that the verse and chorus have two different rhythms. Fastball is an American band that formed in Austin, Texas in 1995. The band originally called themselves "Magneto U.S.A." but changed their name after signing with Hollywood Records. In 1998, their album All the Pain Money Can Buy reached platinum sales within six months of its release, and stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for a year. In addition, the group has been nominated for two Grammy Awards – Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "The Way", and Best Long Form Music Video for their promotional video "The Way". They also received five The Austin Chronicle awards: 1998's Album of the Year, Best Video, Best Single/EP, Band of the Year, and 1995's Best Pop Band
