Matsya, (Sanskrit: "Fish") one of the 10 avatars (incarnations) of the Hindu god Vishnu. In this appearance, Vishnu saved the world from a great flood ...
Matsya can be represented in animal form or in combined human-animal form, with man as the upper half and fish as the lower half. Matsya is usually represented with four hands: one holding the conchshell, another holding the disc (chakra), one in the posture of conferring a favor (varada mudra) and another in the pose of protection (abhaya mudra). According to the canons of sculpture, half of man should be shown to be wearing all the ornaments usually associated with Vishnu.
